Yeah, the highway lately has become a death trap it seems like. Something about warmer weather makes people follow too close and traffic comes to a stop at the Tudor on ramp...I'll be avoiding the highway as much as possible.

Rich, I hate you now for teasing me.

I've been so stoked for the snow to be going away, and now we got dumped on this weekend, and another foot to come by Tuesday...

I've been really patient waiting for the roads to clear...after minimal snow all year, NOW it decides to come, it's just frustrating knowing I'll be out of town for a good portion of the riding season.

No game this weekend, so it's good timing for an Aly run.

Ok guys so I know it's a little bike but I think it would prolly be the best option for me to get back into riding cuz it's been awhile but has anyone heard anything about the new ninja 300. I've got a 2013 priced out at just over 5k at team cc in eagle river. I've done some research and so far I havnt heard or read anything bad but I do know its a little bike haha. It's been a few years since I've done any legit riding aside from around the block on friends bikes and I don't want to take on more than I should. I know once I get comfortable ill be a little more tempted to ride a little harder and I'm thinking a 600 would get me into more trouble this next summer. What do you guys think? Any advice?

    I wouldn't go smaller than 600.

The 250 (300) is a lot of fun in the mountains. It doesn't have the acceleration or speed of the 600+ bikes, but you also don't have to work the brakes as much going into the corners.

But get something in the 250-300 class out on the highway and you're going to wish you had something bigger.

Likewise for cruisers... but add 300cc to that. The Vulcan 900 is a good highway bike. The V-Star 600 is not.

I was thinking the same thing but all the reviews I've read say that the 300 has a lot of low end torque and unlike the 250 the sixth gear is a noticeably longer and drawn out for better highway riding. This is also my first bike. I've ridden R6s and other 600s before but it's been awhile and only once was it a legit ride further than neighborhood riding.

I've been on the 250r and it deff screams on the highway doing 65-70 but I'm curious to know if the 300 would be a bit more comfortable. I think one review I read said at 65 in sixth gear it's sitting just under 7k which is still a bit high but its better than the 250r. It redlined around 13-14 if I remember correctly plus I'm a pretty small dude haha. 150-155 Max so I guess in my mind I'm thinking less weight less work on the bike. Maybe I'm wrong?

Check into a used bike. I picked up my katana 600 for what a small ninja costs new.

The biggest factor for me going 600 over something smaller was my height, I rode a 250 at the ABATE course, and that thing was tiny and uncomfortable for me to sit on.

Keep browsing the web for reviews of the 300, unless you know someone with one who will let you ride and try it out.

Do you have a helmet? I'm considering selling mine for an upgrade.

Yeah what he said ^ , you'll just end up wishing u got a bigger bike 1/2 way through the riding season, and the ABATE classes fill up pretty fast and they are really helpful. I did the kick start program before I took the basic riders course, it was more hands on and less people so the teachers could help you out more if u had any issues

Kawi just came out with the 300. I don't know if he will be able to find any used. I think they JUST came out a few months ago....

John, I started on a 650 and it was good for me. Definitely did some dumb shit and got lucky a few times. My bike is also super forgiving if I pop the clutch (which I did do a few times)... and doesn't wheelie over on me. The first week or so of riding was terrifying. I had been riding dirt bikes for 4 years prior to getting a street bike so I know the basic controls but trying to check blind spots and not having cars hit me was hard. And then figuring out where controls like the blinkers and horn are.... it is a lot to learn in a short amount of time and if you fuck up, the consequences can be pretty severe. That was my experience. Starting on something smaller definitely is not a bad idea. It's not like we have interstate highways up here with a speed limit of 80 on them.

After two years, I have thought about getting a bigger bike... and then I remember that I can do 0 to 80 much faster than anyone needs to be able to on my 650. I am sure an 800 or 1000 would be fun. But so is my 650.

My bike is a Kawi and I love it. don't know about the 300, but I am sure it will be a well tuned machine. Especially if bought brand new.

The little bikes tend to hold their value pretty well. A lot of people buy one and ride it for a season or two or upgrade. Good news is there are always people wanting to get into riding who are wanting to get a smaller bike to learn on.

All that said, I am sure you could handle a 650. (i'd go with a sport/standard and NOT a supersport... that's where people get into trouble) However, going with a 300 would defiantly not be a bad call. It will force you to actually get good at riding and ride defensively. As I understand it, some people who start on bigger bikes will tend to use the accelerator to get out of bad spots. If you have a smaller bike, it will force you to use the brake more to get out of bad spots.... not a bad thing. :) Getting the 300 and then selling it in a year it two probably is not the most cost effective way to do things. But if you are prepared for that... And like I said, the little bikes tend to hold value pretty well.

The whole buy a small bike and upgrade later vs. buy a bigger bike right away and ride it for a while argument is a hotly debated topic amongst riders. Go on any biker forum and there are a million posts "i'm new to riding, what should I get" posts. And the responses are all the same. Some say you will die if you get a big bike. Some say you will be fine and just not ride like a dumbass. Some people are actually reasonable and say it depends on the person..... Really, what it comes down to is what you are comfortable with.

    Hope that helps...
