5w30 mobile 1, or royal purple if you are picky. FATS gives a good military discount of RP

(FATS is a shop on international)

Picky? Mobil-1 is far better than Royal Purple.

Mobil1 5w30 here too. Used 0w30 on accident last winter and didn't notice a different. The shop somehow thought I said zero weight. Oh well.

Don't be silly rich. Royal purple costs WAY more. :)
I always run 5w 30 RP just because I'm picky about what goes into my truck. Chris4x4 proved that their (RP) filters were the best built filter you could get, and they've got a proven history. Premium gas and royal purple fluids are all my baby's ever known.

Some people think differently. Just a matter of opinion. I use mobil-1 for my truck but always RP for my bike. It likes the taste.

    http://personal.linkline.com/rlockyer/oil/oil.xls

RP held up about the same as Castrol GTX... 20w50 sheared down to 30wt in 2,000 miles.

The quality of their oil filters has no bearing on any other product they make (the RP filter is a K&N/M-1 made by Champion).

Did you watch that review by chance rich? I know for a fact that RP filters have a higher pressure rating than any other eh reviewed (not that my truck is capable of reaching those pressures) but for me it really comes down to 'this is a way I can protect my investment even if it's only by a minute margin. My truck is mine forever so if it blows up, it won't be because I used a sub-par oil or filter.

My point was that the quality of the filter has no bearing on the quality of the oil.

The filter is made by Champion for RP... the oil is blended by RP, and they spend a shitload of money advertising their products on motorsports shows and sporting events.

The filter is good. The oil is mediocre.
It's not BAD... it's just no better than Castrol GTX.

That weight shouldn't do anything over 5W-30, it will still operate as a 30 weight oil. Might make a tiny bit of difference in really, really, really cold starts but with a block and oil pan heater, I doubt it.

Like I said earlier, I ran 0w30 last winter and didn't notice any difference. But then again Anchorage doesn't get that cold and I doubt I would notice any difference anyway.

I was at a friends cabin for new years and the temp was -30. It still started fine and dandy...turned over slow though haha.

There is no reason not to run a quality 0w30 in your climate.

On conventional oils, a 10w30 will hold up better than a 5w30 because it carries fewer viscosity improvers. Synthetic oil is naturally more "multigrade" and this robustness allows quality synthetic 5w40 to perform comparably to conventional 15w40 products in turbodiesel applications.

A quality 0w30 still carries the 30wt protection needed for hot weather and to operate the VVTI system, but adds MUCH better cold-weather startup protection.

I would be running 0w30 if I lived up there and had a V6.
