Just given a fourwheeler

My future pa-in-law just got a new fourwheeler, and basically gave me his 1987 Honda Fourtrax 250 2x4. The engine on it runs great, but the rear end has a clunk sound in it. I've changed the rear end fluid on it once, then checked it after riding it and it was muddy looking. Obviously whoever had it before him sank it in the mud. It hasn't had hardly any maintainence done do it. I'm not all that familiar with working on these things, so what are the first things yall would do? Sparkplug, oil, grease the bearings, etc. Just want to make sure I don't overlook anything. Thanks in advance!

Haynes Manuals work well. Those old Honda's are tanks. With very little work they run forever! Grease any fittings you can find (not sure if you have any on that thing but they'd be at the swing arm and front A-arm. Other than that, change the oil as necessary, clean the air filter and keep mud from getting packed in around the engine. Enjoy the quad!

Here it is. Definately needs an oil change. Well, I don't know if you could call it that or not because there is no oil in it lol. Honda Powersports closed down here. Is there another place I can get oil? I dont think I HAVE to use HondaLube on this as it has probably had everything else in it anyways.

You can normally get by with a 10-30/40 motor oil.

All tires have tubes. Gonna replace all of them. I seen some cheap ones at wal mart i might get. Im not gonna blow money on anything like BigHorns or something. Just Something better than the slicks on it. More pics on the way...

Yeah, motor cycle oil works for that. My grizzlies have wet clutches but call for regular motor oil. Might be a Yamaha thing though. I use the motor cycle oil anyway.

I run White bottle Rotella motor oil in my KTM 250sx. Works great. I would run blue bottle rotella in that quad. Thats what my brother uses in his CRF.

This is the white bottle (conventional)


and the blue synthetic

If you can't find one anywhere else, order a Haynes manual from Denniskirk.com. You can also have them send you a catalog for replacement parts (they usually send for free).

hey i have an 86 honda atc 250sx, pretty much the same as yours but one less wheel. a few things...

DO NOT use synthetic oil, just get some 10w40, or some 10w40 ATV / motorcyce oil for the engine, it is also your clutch and transmission oil, those old ones do not do well with synthetic. get some OIL filters too. ebay should have them, those are like a buck each. change that when you do the oil. they go in on the right side of the engine just in front of the kick starter under that plastic cover, dont lose the spring in there.

look at "rocky mountain ATV" for tires, you can get some great deals on them already mounted on new wheels, no messing around with getting the bead to seal

as far as the rear end oil, get some 80W gear oil, keep changing it every few rides and it should be ok. it only takes a few ounces to fill it. i can see where the driveshaft goes into the trans you do not have the proper boot. its got hose clamps and rubber there now, you will want that to be good, they are notorious to for leaking water there, which makes its way down the shaft into the rear gears, new boot is quite a job but you really need it, its about the only problem with those old honda shaft drives.

get a new UNI air filter on ebay (cheap)
