^This?

Out of those I would go with CRF450 or the YZ426 depending on the year.

^^ that probably not the bike for him. since its new and a two stroke moto bike. I suggest for a beginner rider looking for a reliable used bike get a 05+ crf250x or 450x

X2. It depends on what size and weight you are too. I started riding last year and I have a 2008 CRF250r and I love it! I am about 5'8" and weigh about 140pds and I think its perfect for me. I like the 450's to but they are a bit to much power for me right now.

Id have to disagree and say kx250 over either of those 2. Much much lighter which will make learning less of a hassle, easier and cheaper to maintain since 2-strokes only need new pistons and rings every 50 hours, where as older 4-strokes had valves and cam chains that were always going out (especially the hondas), and IMO 2-strokes just teach you better riding habits for beginners. My first bike was a 95 kx250. I put a heavier fly wheel weight, skid plate and bark busters and it ate the trails.

As good as the KTM's are, for a n00b, probably not such a good idea

The KX250F would be a good starter bike. Performance mods later and you'd be set for a while.

Dawg he got a 97 cr250, which should be a good starter bike and yet last a while.
