lol that 250f will smoke a xr200 at half throttle all day. i just picked up a wr450 a couple weeks back and its an awesome trail bike. maybe check those wr250s? theyre pretty peppy little bikes when you tweak em a lil bit, or you could leave it like it is since your a beginner..

id say if you understand how to ride that should be fine, as far as getitng into track, thatd be a great bike for it. ive been racing for years now and ive only ridden yamahas (of course theyre helping me out now) but i can honestly those kawis used to give me 250f's a run. nothin touches my 450 though

I got to ride one. Had to wipe the seat off before I gave it back :D

Talk about amazing. The PB is really smooth for a 2 stroke. Although I basically just gripped and ripped...

Alright so how does maintenance compare for 2 strokes and 4 strokes and how often do each need to be rebuilt?

After reading and talking to people I think I'm dead set on getting a 2 stroke. A Yamaha YZ125 or the KTM 150XC. Any opinions?

sweet, but don't for get about the RM and KX 125s as well. they are good bikes.

Do you have access to a 125 2 stroke just to see if you like it before buying?

YZ if your looking for a new bike.

Katooms use steel frames still I think. Kind of outdated.

And more aftermarket support for the YZs (Atleast around here).

A top end should be rebuilt every 40 hours or so.

New Pistons, Rings, reeds, resleeve the jug or get a new one I guess.

The 2 smokers are easier than 4 strokes to maintain IMO. The maintenance is all more regular and much easier.

Havn't owned a 2 stroke in a few years, so I guess let some of the other guys chime in as well.

You can probably get away with it longer if you run it fairly rich and don't abuse the piss out of it.

Due to recall on the frame and ever dealerships ignorance i replaced my frame and everything under the box myself
maintance on 4 strokes are too much of a hassle, your always adjusting valves or the timing chain. ive had three 4 strokes and always ended up trading them for a 2 stroke in the end. if your going to ride trails id stick to 2 strokes, 1 hour in the woods and that 4 stroke might give you a run for your money trying to kick it over. i have an 05 ktm 250sx now but always owned yammys and they are the 2 best manufacturers

    ...

also I used to run 50:1 belray MC-1 in my 2002 KX 125 and beat that thing to death. It never gave me any problems in 3 years of ownership (only changed the top end once too:eek:)

I think I'm starting to lean towards a YZ. You guys have given great advice. Keep it coming if anything comes to mind. I probably won't get it till closer to winter.

i dont think you will like a 125 2 stroke for trail riding, as a beginner foul plugs will happen frequently if you do not keep it high rev'ed, i owned a yz250 for the longest time and in 06 got a yz250f and its been the best bike i have ever had, i love the 4 stroke instant power all the way through the gear. for a great trail bike i would recommend the yzf426 its a hell of a trail bike

A yz125 can be a great trail bike, I raced in a few desert races passing alot of bigger trail 450s and 250fs. With alot of practice a 125 can really do anything, I know I would rather have a 125 on rocky trails than a 450 :)
I did the vcgp on my 125. Other than mpg it did great on the 2 25 mile laps I did.
My vote is you get a 125-150 2 stroke

mehhhhhh i agree and disagree with what you are saying..

just from personal experiences i have never had a plug foul on me ever. ive had the same one since 2009 and went threw a top end as well and still going strong. 250f's are a ton easier on trials if your in a snag but the lighter 125 i think are a lot easier to handle. if you know how to ride a two stoke theyre just as fast if not faster than a 4 stroke.
