Raptor 700r Vs YFZ450R Vs TRX250X

So im going to purchase a used sport quad here in the next month or so, and i've been looking around at a few different quads. Im looking at years around 06 or 07 up and i want something that can handle the track as well as the trails and everything else. I noticed that the 700R is only about 20 pounds heavier than the 450R which convinced me that the raptor may be able to handle the jumps at the track just as good as the 450 could. But a friend of mine is selling an 07 TRX250X with a Big Gun Evo exhaust, and this bike is a badass for a 250. I rode it all weekend and hit every jump at our local track with ease. He only wants $2300 for it and my idea was to pour several thousand dollars into it to make it a full on track beast. Im leaning towards the TRX, but what are your opinions?

i had a 450r and it was awesome, 70 stock faster with sprocket, exhaust, and some quality tires.

i found mine in 06 (yfz 450r 2006) for 4k. so they should be cheaper for them now and most are already lightly modded. that will be better then a 250 anyday... IMO

I like the size and power of the 300cc - 500cc quads. 250's are nice and fun to throw around but I've always found them too small for me to want to own one. If you rode it and really liked it though, I'd jump on it since you're the one who will be riding it.

700 I think is too big unless you need some serious power for say sand (paddles). Sure, having that get up and go is nice but it's easy to get out of control with something that has that much power off road.

I'm a big fan of the older Warriors and 400ex style ATVs. I've always had a blast riding them and they seemed to be pretty indestructible (I don't have any track experience though).

Yea i used to have an 03 400ex when i was younger, but never had the time or a place to ride it. But now that i'm able to ride i want something else. A lot of my riding will be on the track so i want something with a wide stance like the yfz450r.

If your going for a track beast, go with the smaller one. If you want something trails and general fun go with the TRX or 700R. If you want a full blown sand machine go with the 700R or a Banshee.

The 700r isnt as bad as everything thinks. The 250-450's are much faster revving and higher strung because they are "race machines". The Raptor 700 is a mean machine but is actually pretty mild manered in stock form.

Would it take much to make the 250 track worthy? I mean ive had it on the track and it performs, but it just needs more ya know. And the 450 i can pretty much just do minor mods and have it set up how i want.

I wouldn't even consider the trx250, its under powered and has a trail quad motor in it. It just leaves no room to grow and the suspension sucks IMO, its a air cooled 2 valve 4 stroke motor with no guts. Go with a 450, it has gobs more power, the suspension is 10000x better and it is alot wider making it handle better.
The raptor is a big quad and is actually slower stock vs a stock 450, the suspension is more trail orientated as well as the engine. I have sen some pretty damn trick track raptors but they had thousands of dollars in the engine and suspension.

Get a yfz450, they are a blast. If you are afraid its to much power just short shift and take it easy. If you get that trx250 you will regret it.

Just go over some quad forums and they will say the same thing. If I remeber correctly I dont even think the trx 250 uses a chain

It doesn't, and the drive is offset to the left so you can throw the right bearing or something out if you turn too hard to the left. Kinda sucks, but i'm sure they make a kit to fix the problem and make it more track suitable.

Like I said, if its mainly a track quad go with the 450. You will be much happier. Its wider, better motor, lighter, better suspension, etc all set up for a track. A raptor 700 will work but you will be pissed when your getting schooled by the 450's. If you want to play mainly on the trails and dunes then go with the 700R.. Like said above, skip the trx 250. My mistake on that one, I was thinking it was a larger trx than a 250. Its a gutless entry level pig.

Ditch the idea of the 250 immediately. Like said above...no room for growth. On the track, well your going to get blown away honestly. The 700 I would only consider if you were riding dunes primarily. Its a little top heavy, but does have plenty of get up and go.

Now the yfz I think will meet all your needs. Obviously very track worthy...its been proven. Also good for trails. The only downfall is no reverse (i dont think on any year). Plenty of power and even more room to grow. Not sure what years, but I know you can advance/retard one of the cams for no money and get some free power. Just check some of the yfz forums. Much better of a ride and tons and tons of aftermarket parts!

I have a 700r and it is pretty awesome. I don't race it on a track though. I would pick the 450 over it for track use. It has a lower center of gravity.

Oh and on a speed contest the 450 and 700 are about equal.
