Racing or 4x4 ATV?
i was wondering what you guys like, racing atv's or ones you can off road with. i like the 4x4 atvs to go mudding with. just wanted to get everyones take on it. i had a 2005 suzuki vinson 500 4x4 and got rid of it to get rid of debt and i miss it alot. i would like to get another one of those.

Racing all the way. 4x4s are boring unless you take them in the mud constantly and if you do that you will be replacing brakes and belts all the time. I love my racing bike. I think they are safer too. (with a safe rider) They weigh less and if they start to flip you've got a clutch to help drop it back down.

it's all up to you if you just like to play in the mud get the 4x4 but if you like fast trail ridding go with a sport quad i myself have a 450r and i can go most places a 4x4 can it's just more work and a bit more of challenge.if you have never had a full race quad don't do it there are plenty of great sport quads the way to go is 400ex or the z400 but like i said it's your preference

I really like the looks of the Can Am also. They are very fast. Although, things to consider if you will be riding alot in the mud or deep water, like streams.
What type of drivetrain components does the ATV have? Honda has chain drive technology and a lot of others use the belt drive technology as its cheaper. The problem I have with the belt drive technology as I have seen this in yamahas and others that when you get it wet, and I mean submerging it, that belt has a tendency to slip. Chain technology will not slip period. I have literally sank my Honda to the airbox and it still pulled right through. I have been in water so deep that I bailed off and my ATV floated across because of my oversized tires. I have abused my ATV to the max and it still kicks butt. Its just my opinion and I am biased having a Honda. |

I used to live on a farm that was extremely wet, constant mud, pond sized puddles the works. My honda rancher never had a prob well once but it was a 3 ft deep hole and i got it out with log leverage

Go sporting the quads are lighter and faster and more maneuverable than 4x4 quads. Being lighter is less arm fatigue for riding all day. Also if you ride alone a 4x4 quad is harder to get off of you to impossible. The Raptor700 is 395lbs and is decent to throw around and a ton of power. The sport quads like the Z400 are excellent bikes good handling and loads of suspension. The 450yfz are great just a little higher maintenance. The 400ex is a good bike as well but under powered compared to the Z400 also the Z400 has front Res shocks. Depends on your riding and what you like. Most sport quads will go where 4x4 can go just with a little more high end power and a tap of the clutch to pop your front up over obstacles. Also Sport quads have a lower center of gravity making them less likely to tip over when side hilling or over of camber hills.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Just a few pics of sport quads and what they can do. Slick its up to you and what and where you ride as to what quad you want to buy but look at all of them as I have owned both and would never go back to utility again. Mostly because of the weight and a lot more working parts to have trouble with down the rode. CV boots, more linkage, another front axle, all this adds up to maintenance. Just like our trucks. we love them and want to take care of them. But also want to get out and ride as well. |

He live's in FL there's more swap there, sport's aren't good in mud. I like sport's race mine when I have the time but in the long run I think he would be better off with 4x4 Depend's . What his friends ride believe me it's no fun if your the only 2x4 out of the group. |

I guarantee no sport quad is going to go where i go on my 4x4. It may hop over obstacles and be great on the trails. But it will not go across mudd filled water holes unless you are doing 50mph and skimming across the top. Sand hills , trails, racing around, all around fun , I would get a sport quad. Nasty mud and water holes, deep rutted trails, and for pulling out the quads all day long, I say get a 4x4. Fast and fun = definately sport quad, fast and muddy = 4x4. My 680cc will do 65mph no problem. |

Also if I was riding with people that I had to pull out all the time I would not be wanting to ride with them. Pulling people out of mud wholes is not riding in my opinion and not much fun. |
