Alot less people in Glamis then I expected for the start of the season.
A lot more people in Dumont than expected, been slow all last season and seems to have picked up again so far this season.

It's just someone jumping a dune and coming down on a group or riders stopped on the next hill.

We were very, very slow last season at the hospital. This year saw some come in. About normal for a Halloween. Most years I don't see much at Halloween. My impression is its mostly experienced family at that time. We'll see how tg goes.

I haven't heard any reports of serious injuries from Dumont over Halloween, didn't see the chopper which is always good. The Pahrump Valley Hospital is the closest to Dumont.

Is there a most common type of injury that comes in from Glamis??

I'd say the most common injury I see I an L-1 compression fx. That would mean squashing your lumbar vertebra into a wedge shape instead of a square rectangle

And way more quad riders. Bikes and buggies are kind of tied. But as I posted earlier too, always inexperienced and drunk. Not talking bad about beer mind you. I love that stuff. Rural hospitals dont have long term care. Or specialists. So if you need a bone pinned they send you into the city hospitals.

We ride quads and buggies. I don't drink and I've been riding dunes for a few years now, so I know what you are talking about .
If they are serious (from Dumont) then they usually get flown to UMC in Vegas.
Few years ago a couple friends of mine crashed in Utah at Coral Pink, we took them to a small hospital in Kanab, one was flown to UMC from there with a punctured lung, 5 broken ribs and a broken collar bone, the other spent the night under observation for possible internal and head injury, but was fine. They were riding too fast for the time of day and launched off a dune without seeing the top, one right after the other...neither drunk, but one stupid and the one following was inexperienced.

Yeah compression fx's come from coming down, wrong,or too high, or too hard. Imagine flexing so far forward that you wedge the anterior portion of the vertebra from this [ ] to this <]. Spinal cord is posterior so usually no nervous system damage.

ouch, that would suck..We don't jump really, but coming off the top of a dune the wrong way can make for a nasty landing.

What is the common injury from sandrails?? I'm wondering if back also mostly due to wearing seatbelts the wrong way...harsh landings and rollovers are the common crashes.

Sandrails can be nasty. But usually only the real big crashes. Mostly broken arms flailing outside the cage during rollovers. Head injuries from hitting the roll bars. Helmet would take care of that. Some back injuries from jumping. If it is a real bad rollover ( which I see the least of) the maybe some ribs and internal injuries too. Keep you hands inside the ride at all times

Cool, thanks for the info.
We are changing out our seatbelts soon and adding wrist restraints, we have 5 point harnesses. Head is protected as long as the belts are tight, our cage is high enough since we are both average/small size people. We don't jump much at all and never big! I'm big on the safety stuff, so I just wanted to know if there is something I might overlook not knowing the common types of injuries.

Yeah believe me, you can't stop living. I snowboard too. I would say that is probably as dangerous if not more in ways than my motorcycle riding. I am much more cautious at some things now. But mostly I just try to keep things in perspective. If I'm tired I don't ride. Go home early a lot. Would rather come back another day and do it again. Remind myself not push it beyond my limits and skills. If I was doing this stuff in my 20's instead of my 30's I would have died a long time ago. That's why I posted that I was not trying to start anything. But learning a few things like that can go a long way. Just listen to peoples stories. Whenever stuff happens it always starts out with things like
"just one more run", "it was the end of the day and we were going home"
And if you really get down to it. Of course I see more car accidents and drunken assaults than anything. People are fooled into a false sense of security because driving a car on the road is something everybody does. So it is considered safe and ok. Knowing yourself and your limits goes a long way.
