get the holeshot! j/k. its your first race so you will be nervous, so try and pace yourself. make sure you breath and look ahead. good luck!

My advice, start slow, get comfortable, start pushing, its a long race and since it is your first race the most important thing is to finish and put some corn startch in your pants...( prevents monkey butt ) you dont want that. If you can ride at your own pace and dont crash and have energy left at the end you should pass people at the end that have worn down because they pushed it too hard and crashed and made mistakes. Try riding on the side of the trail instead of in the middle, thats where all the bump are that will wear you out. Good Luck..............2 hours? |

In beginner class they usually only run 1/2 race usually 50 miles..
Like said above, dont try to win in the first 10 minutes, you will understand why...pace yourself, dont let people out of the box pace you, they will eventually wear out and you can pass them. Race like you dont care if you lose, its your first one, just use it as a learning experience rather than a race. DONT PUSH TOO HARD WHEN YOU CANT SEE, very important.Good luck, and remember to have fun. I have been racing since I was 12 years old so I have a little experience. BRAAAAAP!

I just ran my first harescramble 2 weeks ago. Here's what i gathered:
First off, shotgun starts are neat. We straddled the front tire with dead bikes, and had to jump on and start. Bark busters are a life saver in my area, there were a few sections where the gap between tree's you had to get thru was CLEARLY smaller than the handlebars. A hydration pack is a good idea, however, I found i didnt really ahve time to use it, taking a hand off the handlebars was tricky, plus i was breathing so hard, taking time to drink was tough. Fill your hyd. pack with gaterade, it was awesome Another tip that i'd never heard of, but tried, was, to eliminate cramping, do pickle juice shots. I felt way better after a 80 minute Harescramble than i did after a 15 minute Moto. Drink lots of water a week before hand. I still like the theory: Get out in front first if you can, and then take your time, you're better off being the obstacle, than fighting the obstacle. |

Stay at a comfortable pace. Most important thing is to finish! Sucks to go out and break, so keep yourself and your gear together and get to the finish line.
You'll be able to push harder as your experience and confidence grows. Good luck!!

Ride at 80%, that way you have 20% to spare in case you need to dodge someone or something and you won't wear yourself out to quick. That 80% helps keeps things in perspective as well. If your balls out the whole course you're gonna make a lot of mistakes.

everyone here so far has great advice.arm pump was always a killer for me.i know that's not a big deal for bike riders,i myself ride atv's.one helpful hint is nutrition potasium is great for fighting muscle fatiege.like said in an above post eat carbs also.i always did pasta and banana's a few days leading up to a race.some other advice i got was hold on with your legs that death grip we get on the bars can be a big factor in your performance.most of the best advice i got was from the guys ridding the bikes.like most said already it's all about pace and don't push past your limits.you got a great bike and good luck post back with how it went and any pics you get.

Sounds like a good time. I forgot to mention, for the next race anyway, a couple days prior drink more water than usual. Also, like jfr2, eat potassium the day prior and day of. I usually stretch throughout the day prior as well.
