Which bike is best?

So i was thinking if i sold the harley i might have 3 or 4 grand for a motorcycle. I wanted to get a dual sport that had power and that fit me best. I want to do trails and to street use. I am about 6'0 and 250lbs. My dad also needs to be able to ride it. hes about 6'5 and 280. what would be the best dual sport? i think the xr650 or the KTM EXCs look pretty nice.

You really can't go wrong with either one of those. I'm a Honda man myself, so I'd probably go with that one if the price was equal between the two.

 

For off road (trails) you would want to get a light bike, not more than 300 lbs. Much easier to ride and pick it up. First my husband got a Kawasaki KLR650. Excellent on the streets or on the highway. Not so on the trails. Too big, heavy, about 380 lbs. Try to pick that up when you go down.. The tires also an issue, street tires will suck on the road and off road tires won't be great on the street. (road tires and sand is a very bad combination). We do mostly trails so husband traded the 650 for a Kawasaki klx250 that is great on the trails (mud, sand, hardpack), ok on the street (knobby tires and uncomfy seat) and not for highway use, top speed with a 250lbs guy is about 65mph. It weights about 280 lbs so not a problem to pick it up. Husband is 6' and the seat height is perfect for a 6' and/or taller. I'm only 5'2 so I wont recommend my bike. So you should decide which will you do more road or off road? Or get two bikes, imho.

 

I have a DRZ 400 and like it a lot. I'm 6'-1" 180# and have no problems with it at all. You can get a heavier spring for the rear end if it sags too much. A honda xr 650 is another good choice. The basic design has been around for many years. It is built well and will last for a long time. Suzuki makes the DR 650 which is similar to an xr 650, so don't forget to look at those as well. From what I have heard, KTMs are great, lots of power and as close to an honest to god dirt bike as you can get and still be street legal. I have heard there is a lot of normal maintenance required though. The nice thing with the DRZ 400 is you get liquid cooling and generally a more modern motor design than the air cooled bikes. Check out some of the forums like advrider and thumpertalk to see what others think about other brands. You will find more info on those two sites than you can imagine.

I think your best bet is find a KTM dealer and ride a 690 Enduro. It's no tight woods bike but forest/fire roads and twisties are where it excels best. It'll do fine at highway speeds but there is no fairing. If you feels it's too small try the 990 Adventure. Rediculous power and capable offroader.

 

so if i was going to do mostly road.. and prolly not ride a lot. but still want good off road capability and i want a cheap bike. like 3 grand. what would be my best option

 

For mainly road/highway, adventure rides, hardpack, dirt, some sand, some mud the KLR650 was working very well for us. Got it new, around $4800 ($40/month finance) We sold it about a year old at the time with about 6K on it for $3200, because we are now riding 95% on trails, which has mostly deep sand and mud and it was very heavy for these conditions.

 

i think im just gonna get an all offroad bike. prolly the biggest KTM i can afford- maybe a 450 or 525. if i only use it like 4 or 5 times a year does it require lots and lots of maintence?

You can't go wrong with a honda xr 650. It's a honda....that pretty much means the bike is indestructable
