Dirt bike help

I am planning on picking up my first dirt bike. I don't know much about dirt bike , but I have have a quad and had a 600 street bike before. I would like to know what is a good starter bike. Right now I am looking into a 250 yamaha. Any advice would be great thanks.

 

It depends on how much you weigh! I weigh 160 and I have a Honda crf250 and it fits me perfect. I think you'd be happy with any 250 in my opinion

If you have any plans to ride sand dunes get a 450. My first bike was a CRF 250X and it was great for trails but didn't have the power for the dunes. I'm 6'1 and 185lbs.

 

250 for sure! I'm 5 7 and fits pretty good. Kinda gotta hike my leg up to get it over the seat but you'd be happy with it

 

If you weigh 150 pounds with a 250 you'd do fine in the dunes. My bike does great but it is nice to have a 450 if you can handle it

 

get a 250 2 stroke. I am 6'2" and weigh 160 and have no problems in the dunes. 2 stroke all the way....less maintenance, easy rebuild, crazy power.

True, but remember a 250 two stroke is almost equivalent to a 450 four stroke.

The decision really comes down to what kind of riding you plan to do.

 

In general id say that any 250 four stoke is a pretty good beginner bike. 250 two strokes have too much power for beginners. And the power coming from two strokes are way more out of control than four strokes.

 

im 5'7 and ive got a yamaha 250f and a 450 and i love the 250f. ive got a 290cc kit in it and its plenty of power plus ive got suspension work on it and its lower so i can reach perfect. ive raced it, gone to the desert with bunch of hill climbs, and gone to the dunes. Its perfect for all of them. People say go with a 450 but its all about the rider. I make it up hill climbs that people cant do on there 450's. it just all depends on the rider

-Plus ive had a ktm 200 two stroke and a yz 250 two stroke and the 250 four stroke is by far the best

i bought a kx250 2 stroke as my first bike. im 5 10 and weigh 175. that bike was too much for me. it was too hard to control most of the time. i traded a friend a year later for a cr125 and i feel much more comfertable on that bike. and it still has enough power for me.

 

I have a yz125, yz250f, and yz450f and I have to say the 125 is the most fun to ride, most the time. for a beginner I would pick up a 125 or 250 2 stroke, they are a lot cheaper and easier to maintain, considering you've had a street bike it shouldn't take too long to get used to riding a 2 stroke dirt bike

 

I was also considering the yz125 but alot off pplz told me I will out grow it and to get a 250.

 

You will out grow it but then you sell it and buy the 250, used bikes don't drop too much in value, it's better that way then getting the 250 right off the bat and finding out that it is too much for you the hard way

 

Street bikes and quads are completely different from dirt bikes so there isn't any experience (other than location of throttle, clutch and brakes) that carries over to riding a two-wheeled off-road machine. I would always recommend a smaller-engined bike over a bigger-engined bike for a beginner. That being said, if you must have a motorcross bike, a 250 four-stoke is probably the best way to go. If having a motorcross bike doesn't matter, I'd recommend a TTR-230 or CRF230 as a first off-road bike. Get the experience on a smaller bike before moving up to a bigger bike, it just might save your life!

You cant go wrong with a YZ250F. I've been riding one for like the past 7 years or so and i've loved everyone that i've owned. My 250 right now is bored out to a 267 and I love it. But then again those YZ450F are pretty bitchin, i've been thinkin about upgrading to one of those for my next bike. But for a beginner a 250 would be a great way to go.
