Are you learning Catia, Creo, NX or ACAD yet?

I've really only used Solidworks. I have some time in AutoCAD as well, but mostly Solidworks.

    'afternoon!

Try to get more exposure to those other ones especially Creo. When you graduate or get close to it I may have a job for you.

Good luck with that! I went the structural engineering route myself.

I second Jonny's statement. Try to get as much software exposure as possible. Depending on what area in mech you go, I may be able to hook you up with an internship next summer.

Oooo. Caught my attention. I'll have to do some research. I'm always told Solidworks is the industries leader though. Well mainly used anyways.

    Why structural?

Is there classes at ASU or anything for these other softwares? Or where would I get 'officially' taught?

And next summer as in 2016 I assume?

Not true at least in Aerospace where I work. Dont get me wrong we have some Solidworks but not a lot. Creo is 20k a seat and its what makes my company a bit unique. This is probably why you don't see it in the university level. Ebmery Riddle doesn't even teach it. ACAD and Solid works will get you in the door but they will hit you with Creo pretty quick. I cant talk to much about what we do here but I can assure you that if you can get that knowledge, I can at least get you an interview or internship. The rest is on you.

Structures always caught my attention. I like some of the gymnastics required to make an architectural design stand up. After 8 years it still hasn't gotten old!

For software classes, not sure if ASU has any, but JC's seem to always have a class or two (at least for solid works, ACAD, and Revit)

Yeah, unfortunately. Our mechanical department just hired two interns for the summer I think. I could reach out to some other places if your interested though. What area are you wanting to get into?

Solidworks is good for light stuff. Boeing, Honeywell, Toyota, and others use more robust programs like Catia, Creo, NX, etc. If you have used used Solidworks, then Catia v5 is cake. I can't talk about the others as I have not used them. From what I have gathered, you are not going to get any experience using those programs at ASU. They cost about $30k a seat where as ASU can get Solidworks for $3-5k, maybe less. The only school I think would use the more expensive software is Embry Riddle, but that school is expensive already.

Best way to get experience with those software is through employers. Make sure to get an internship.

Edit: disregard my comment about Embry Riddle. Jon made that statement.

It is a common thing for people to ask Cmack to leave. Have you ever meet the guy? 10 minutes around him and you'll be begging for a 12g to the dome.

So this goes to show you how stupid school network admins are.

Admin calls me to tell me that the product isn't working. This is a local school so I head out there to check it out. I hop on his access point and notice 83 connected devices. I said to him the kids got the password and attached to your network. They are saturation your WiFi on this AP and you need to boot them off. You can watch the logs streaming youtube, pandora, netflix, etc.

The admin starts to freak out asking how they 'hacked' the access point. I look up and notice something.

The fucking password is printed out and stuck to the access point for 'easy reference'. I pointed up and said "Well whoever's dumb-ass idea it was to put the password on it is at fault and you can blame them".

Turns out the guy I was talking to, face to face, was that dumbass..... He didn't think the kids would look up and notice it.

This fucking idiot gets about 80k a year FYI. Why do I know that, I applied for his job last year and he got it over me.

The best part of this is his boss, the guy who choose him over me, was in the room and remembered who I was from when I applied. On my way out I just said "I think you made the wrong decision" and he replied "You have no fucking idea how much I regret my decision now".

I hope this guy calls me.

And this is very common for school network admins. Typically they are not that great because schools pay like shit.

Thanks Jon. I'll see what I can do about getting the correct knowledge now.

So basically ACAD and Solidworks are 'introductory' programs for the colleges and they get more advanced/useful once you actually get into the industry? Makes sense... but why not just start us off with those more advanced ones? Or are they all slightly different depending on what field your going into?

Honestly? Where ever the money takes me right now. That's why I chose ME. When I was younger I wanted to do Architecture, but the economy fell and my father talked me out of it. I enjoy the engineering design aspect of anything. Aero or Automotive would be awesome, but I won't be picky. As long as I get to design something and given a ton of info I'm good. I would be very interested!!

I've never quite met Cmack besides a few 100 posts, but for some reason I'm not surprised.
