Newb W/Stock 12 Trd Dbl Cab- First Mod?

Hello fellow ARIZONAN'S!

So this is my fourth Taco since buying an 08 v6 dBbl cab Trd sport brand new. For economic reasons, I traded it in for a 00 extra cab I4 with 115k miles. Talk about a down grade! I was a contractor and was killing the 08 with 120 miles daily so downgrading was not that bad of a thing, I hope it went to a good home. The little 4 cyl was great, it had a bigger bed and was a perfect work truck.

The 4 cyl ended its life this past December in a minor head on with, believe it or not, the exact year, model and color truck, except his was a 4X4.

I changed careers and was not sure how it would work out, so on new years day I bought a 2012 single cab 4 cyl, as basic as you can, in case I had to go back to contracting.

The new job has been great and my wife and I have been very fortunate this year so last week, 2 days after my 10k service we traded in the little single cab for a new 2012 trd O.R double, 6 speed.

When I had the 08 I did 4 peaks in quite a bit of snow. Everything was great till I got stuck in the late afternoon. Luckily, someone came along and pulled me out and did me a favor and lecturerd me on being prepared. I quickly started making a list of mods but never had a chance as I ended up having to get rid of the 4x4.

I swore I would never get stuck again and not be prepared again. So now that I have this 2012 4x4 I plan on getting front and rear high clearance bumpers, a winch and a good recovery bag, block straps etc and sliders.

So after such a long winded intro my questions simple. How is the factory underside protection? Should I focus on beefing up the underside before I even think about suspension? What brands do you all like for bumpers and armor?

Thank you in advance as I am limited to $5,000 for upgrades and after pricing some stuff out, that goes pretty quick!

suppose to do a group buy for the High Clearance one in a couple of months, or he has a group buy going on now. the Hi-lift points in the bumper and getting rid of the low hanging hitch mount are the key here
I am looking at doing the 4x4 innovations bolt on slider with fill and kickout because I don't want to weld anything to the frame for warranty purposes. plus these have the plates under the rail for dragging on rocks and supporting it better

maybe aluminum and saving the powder coating costs. since I don't wheel a lot.

All-pro bumper is another option since they make a 2012 version.

I was also considering a rear Diff guard with the E-lock protector

Then I was going to figure out suspension because then I will have the weight of the truck on it to determine if I need larger coils in front and leaf pack in the back. if you were interested in saving some shipping costs we could see about ordering at the same time if we agreed on vendors.

I want to go 235/85/16 or 255/85/16 BFG KM2's and the latter require 3" of lift.
On the Cheap is Bilstein suspension on the expensive Icon extended reservoirs and leaf pack instead of an AAL. I was thinking of Firestone airbags for handling the extra load. Either way tubular UCA's for proper alignment

I would go with 265/75-R16 instead of the 235/85. If you start getting int othe 255 and 285 size tires you are going to have rubbing and need to trim as well as a cab mount chop. A 265/75 you can run with minimal issues.

Also, you dont need airbags to handle the extra weight. I had the TSB rear springs with an AAL and now have ALLPRO Expo leaf pack with a HEAVY rear bumper and swing away tire carrier and my leafs carry the load like its not even there.

Check out my build posted above and you will see pictures of all of it and how it sits with my previous suspension and this one.

Extremachn1- When you say say your truck is fully armored, could you explain what components you have. I am assuming you have sliders, front skid plate, differential armor. What else do you have (brands) and what do would you do different.

I currently have CBI Offroad front and rear bumpers, Allpro IFS/Tranny/transfercase skid, and AVID weld on rock sliders. The I like the Allpro skids but others dont liek allpro. The Allpro is only 1/4" steel instead of the slightly thicker and heavier design of budbuilt and others. I have bashed mine pretty good and it keeps on rocking so I have no complaints. I even mounted a BIG rock that lifted my front end off the ground and my allpro front skid plate took it like a champ.

I have plans for the control arm skids, 3rd member(diff) skid, and a gas tank skid in the future.

Honestly, any of the companies on here can hook you up with good stuff be it CBI, relentless fab, allpro, AVID, budbuilt, Demillo, etc. They are all good companies. Its all about finding what works for you.

I have hauled my motorcycles and quads in the back without issue. I have towed 4000+ lb boats, etc. The expo springs are made for carrying extra weight in the bed.

I have Relentless sliders and front and back bumpers and I couldn't be happier. I rarely worry about bumping into something on the trail.

For skids I have Bud Built IFS, Bud Built mid and Relentless t-case which have all held up really well.

I might sound like a fanboi but Relentless Fab products are awesome!

Yes you do, but I also agree that Relentless Fab is good work. I almost went with them but due to the group buy and the 4+ month wait I went with CBI and I couldnt be happier.

Your first MOD should be Avid sliders!!!! Strong as hell and they not only protect you they look cool. Supporting a great team, local business and getting a hell of a deal at the same time. Its the only underside protection I have and they have saved my ass plenty of times! I can still open all 4 doors!

Mine they had to cut the rear fender but they do make one that does not have to be cut. Check out CBIOFFROAD.COM and see what they have.

Thanks everyone for your input. Here is what I am thinking. Icon stage 4 remote reservoirs, with icon UCA and aal or should I get a leaf pack? . LCA? Also do I need to gusset the spindles? Or buy new ones?

Avid weld on sliders, if bolt on can you use them as hight lift? I read welding could weaken the frame on Some manufactures site and they claimed their weld on strengthens the frame while others weaken the frame. I figured if they bolt on you could easily remove for repair and re painting.

Relentless rear bumper. Not sure of the front.

Then tires and rims, no idea yet which. Finally armor the rest of the bottom.

Weld on sliders are stronger than bolt on. And get a new leaf pack don't go add a leaf if your already going tools on spending money it will be worth it to just get a whole new leaf pack.

My build is going in stages.
1. Lift OME complete (done)
2. Wheels & Tires 33" BFG KM2s on 1st Gen TRDs(done)
3. Relentless Skids & Sliders (on order)
4. Relentless Bumpers & Winch (planned)
The first two steps gave me the ability to go over many obstacles.
The next two steps are for when I can't.

Did you do the 885 springs in front or the 886 for the winch and bumper later? How are you liking the OME lift? I think I need to also do the OME so I can fund other pieces like bumpers/tires/etc.
