I believe that weight is only accurate if the winch has synthetic cable. If its got steel cable add another 30lbs or so to that. Correct?

Just a bunch of old crap
My Warn M8000 had a shipped weight of 78 lbs with steel cable. The sturdy box added maybe 2 lbs to the overall weight.

That is true. Steel is definitely way more heavy than synthetic. I'm partial to the synthetic myself, for weight reduction as well as safety. Ive seen first-hand what a steel winch cable can do when it breaks.

Warn winches are built a little heavier than other brands for sure. My 10K is a Smittybilt, with the synthetic line it was $375 out the door. I haven't had any problems with it so far.

    :goingcrazy:Total Wreck Mine U.G. Shenanigans!:yay:

Deep in the Empire Mountains southeast of Tucson, lie the sparse, overgrown remains of what was once a mining town with a very strange name; Total Wreck.

Perched on the eastern slopes above Cienega Creek, This mining boom town was established in 1881, after a huge silver discovery was made in a hill to the northwest by Jerry Dillon. After Dillon staked the claim on what would later become the Total Wreck Mine, His accompanying friend, John Harvey, asked him what he would name the claim. Dillon responded with "I don't know, the whole damn hill is strewn with quartz boulders and looks like a total wreck!". And the name stuck.

Typical in layout for a large mining camp, by 1884, Total Wreck had 5 saloons, 2 general stores, 2 hotels, butcher shop, a brewery, and 50 houses, with a population of 200. The town prospered until around 1891, when the mine played out, and the town was abandoned completely by the turn of the century. Today, only a few scattered stone ruins and foundations are what remain of this once busy boomtown.

But we're not really interested in an old townsite, are we? We're more interested in what lies BENEATH it...

To the northwest of the old townsite is the Total Wreck Mine. Occupying one massive hillside, this mine and all it's tunnels, shafts, and stopes has rendered this hill almost completely hollow. With over a mile of tunnels, these workings are huge.

Level apon level of tunnels, spaced out every 75 vertical feet, like the floors of a building, continue down into the earth, finally bottoming out at a depth of 500 feet below the surface.

Massive hand-excavated caverns, with walls still streaked with lead and silver ore, open up from tunnels. Diagonal 35 degree sloped tunnels descend from one level to another. Ore car rail from over 120 years ago still runs through some tunnels.

Old artifacts left behind by the miners (lunch pails, dynamite boxes etc) are still to be found in the deepest levels, many of which have not seen human entry since the mine was abandoned before 1900..

Sounds like a good time, huh?

To all those interested-- This mine is southeast of Tucson, near the town of Vail. The target date for this subterranean adventure is August 17th, a Saturday. This will be an all-day explore, probably at least 6 hours underground. I'll be working on meet-up details here in the next week or so and will be re-editing this :)

As for the trail to the mine, there are two ways in. One way comes south from I10 and follows a gas line access road. I haven't personally driven in this way, but from what I hear, it's rough as shit and rocky. Lots of steep, loose hillclimbs and washouts. The other way comes in off of Sonoita Hwy, and is both graded dirt, asphalt, and easy dirt trails. There is tight brush in spots, not too bad though. If need be, trimming of brush can be done.

    Meetup time and location

Meetup will be on Sonoita Hwy (Hwy 83), just south of the interchange with I-10. This interchange is southeast of Tucson, just east of the town of Vail. There is a large dirt lot along the Hwy under some large power lines, this will be the meetup spot. Meet time is going to be 8-8:15 am. We should have enough time to go through the mine and won't be getting done too late. We will be driving in to the mine site from the Hilton Ranch access road, which is the easier of the two routes mentioned above.

***Note to everyone*** For those of you who attended the Dragoons meet and got a taste of those mines, you guys are all aware of some of the dangers of entering these places. The Total Wreck is no exception. In fact, from my experience, this mine is more dangerous than all the mines we entered during the Dragoon trip combined. Mine exploring is inherently dangerous, and everybody should be on their guard in areas with loose and unstable ceilings, vertical shafts in the floors of tunnels (called "winzes"), areas with wood timbers and/or shoring, steep inclined tunnels etc. There will be a lot of crawling and crouching; lots of tight spaces, so if you're claustrophobic, then this isn't a good trip to go on. There is also a lot of climbing (up and down inclined tunnels and some ladders). This will be true spelunking, so try to dress accordingly. Wear clothes that you plan to get dirty. Jeans and t-shirts are a good idea.

With all that being said, who's in?

Attendees with a taste for danger:

    Ralphie +1
    Snowtank (maybe)
    T4C0CH40S (maybe)
    GERM (maybe)

Sounds Epic yet again!! I'll try to get the next day off so I don't have to worry about work that night. What time do you think would be best? Early morning? I'm really curious where this is, sounds like somewhere I've been to, the townsite anyway
