So I'm without my truck for a few weeks while getting front bumper, back bumper, 5th tire rack, and skids all the way to exhaust. All of this is being fabricated out of 3/16 inch steel.

    My question is this...
Will this extra weight cause my truck to perform poorly off road? I like to explore desert trails, rock crawl, and camp.

I'm currently running Bilstein 5100 shocks on front and stock TRD Bilstein on the back with a 3 inch lift....

I was at SDHQ today and priced my dream setup using Icon Extended Travel shocks but i'm looking anywhere from 4500 and up to 6500 if i go all out. This is pretty expensive but can be done if needed. I will probably do it eventually but am unsure of how soon i should get it done.

Back to the original question; With the added weight, is a new/better shock setup needed?

    Thank you all,
Stay Active; i love to read the forums!

I hope you meant 1/4" and not 3/4".

It'll be bad on and off road. The coils are not designed to take that kind of weight. You'll need at a minimum... 650lb springs up front.

TSB leafs would probably suffice for awhile until they wear out (which they do quickly) for the rear.

Sounds like i should address my weight issue sooner rather than later...
How long would I have until it's absolutely necessary to do something?

I'll go for the icon's extended travel soon but need to sell a car first! lol

It'll settle pretty quick over a week or two. Probably still be perfectly drivable just not ideal and I'd avoid any emergency type maneuvers with that weight on there.

Okay i'm a retard about thickness of the steel.

I called my guy today and it's actually 3/16 inch steel.

Regardless, tell me how you get such a deal. I'd be interested in saving over 1000 dollars from my original quote.

What are you getting that would cost over $4k? You can get extended Icons with reservoir and UCA's for $2k plus the cost of your choice of leaf springs. I'm not seeing where the huge quote is coming from.

^Alcan leaf pack plus Icon VS 2.5" RR shocks would add about $1600 in the rear, so $3.6k plus shipping, taxes, and various other bits like steel braided brake lines. More if smabbott pays SDHQ to install. smabbott can also add the other stuff in the Icon catalog, like a secondary shock hoop + bypass shock, hydraulic bumpstops, etc.

@smabbott: Heavier armor requires stiffer springs, which will require beefier shocks to dampen properly. You will need OME shocks as a minimum. The 2.5" dia coilovers would be a further upgrade if you intend to rech higher speeds off road.

    Itemized Quote from SDHQ:
    -----------------------------------------
Icon Extended Travel w/ Remote Resi - $1439
    Icon Billet UCA - $1129
    Icon Rear 2.5 Shocks - $881
    Leaf Pack - $950
    Total Chaos LCA - $1800
5-7 hrs of install at $95/hr
    $85 for alignment.

This new icon setup has been consuming my thoughts lately. Any tips and/or recommendations for saves would be ideal as I know the setup i want will not be cheap regardless of the route i take. I'd try to save money by doing the install myself but due to my lack of experience, it sounds like there may be more risk for additional cost than if i paid someone to do it.

I'm a computer nerd who loves to go on 4x4 adventures. I lack the mechanical skills that would benefit me in this hobby but this learning curve is part of the fun!

Any particular reason you want the TC LCA's. That's a big chunk of cash for marginal performance gains.

I wasn't considering the Icon 2.5's for the rear. $1k for rear shocks

$1k for rear shocks makes a bigger improvement than $1k for front shocks, actually.

I like TC LCAs for following reasons--
    - Performance Gains
    - Durability
    - Sweet looking :)

My thoughts are if i'm going to spend money on suspension, i want to do it as "right" as possible.

    @KenLyns or @bueller or @anyone else ... thoughts?

No performance gains from TC LCAs unless you make use of the secondary shock mount, since the shock or CV will limit downtravel.

I wouldn't do LCAs unless I was going long travel.
