    Posted below.

Yes using a bent leg pin I couldn't gain access. Not complaining but saying it's a pain in the butt.

I love it the way it is. I turn and look back at my truck every time I park :) one idea might be to have access points on each side of the hitch on the underside of the bumper.

    Dat ass

Cutting out the bottom becomes a strength issue for the hitch.

Ah I see. I'll deal. It's not like I will be pulling my 16" drop down hitch on and off every day.

I'm thinking ill just hang them off of my D rings I guess. Better than nothing and I don't want to alter anything that drops down. Or possibly wending 2 tabs on my drop down hitch. I'll put up a pic

Ok, so I have to ask the question. Why does everyone insist on putting the tire on the passenger side? Makes MORE sense to put it behind the driver. That way there is a greater field of vision.

Taco lean? So it's not hanging out in the road when you open it up. I honestly don't mind it but I also tow a lot of trailers so having to rear view mirror doesn't bother me.

For sure. I was posting the math on another board about this also. person has 3 full jerry cans, and a spare back there on a dual swingout. wheel and tire is ~90# and 3 full jerry cans ~95#. If there is already going to be that much weight back there not including the weight of the bumper and swingouts... so if there was a choice, still think I would mount behind the drivers side. Traffic issue could be solved with a quick disconnect limit strap similar to the way our tailgates are already.

Trust me, you don't want 3 Jerry cans on this tire gate, that's a lot of weight to be hauling around all the time. I have 72# in liquid weight on it at the moment and wouldn't want to haul around anymore or even that much for a matter of fact.

Not tracking on how a strap will keep it out of traffic, not that it really adds much width to the vehicle when in the 90* position.

    Yes of course they are!

The reality is that putting it on either side blocks the rear ward field of view. The very minimal gain in view is completely negated by the drawback of having the tire carrier swing out towards traffic. I could make it swing the other way but I really don't think it's worth it. And yes I have one on my Tacoma. We could also mount the tire on the other side of the swing out, I just normally don't as the tire is the heaviest thing there and it is best to keep the weight close to the hinge. It would take it, just a detail I keep in mind.

As for 3 Jerry cans, that is starting to put a ton of weight pretty far behind the rear axle. I'm with Chris on this, I don't think you'd be happy with that setup. It has nothing to do with our tire carriers, but everything to do with the truck itself. These trucks get saggy ass on wash board gravel roads bad enough as it is. Could it be done, sure. But it may be a better idea to put one up by the cab and distribute the weight a little better.
