who installed their own stereo from crutchfield...

I really need a new head unit...

my 09 stereo is such a P.O.S

is it easy to do? I want to put a kenwood in...

I want the finish to be like silver like what i have now...
can any one most some pics? thanks!

 

Did this on my first gen on friday. It took about 2 hours total. The hardest part for me was getting the wiring harness straight and soldering all the connections correctly. Their instructions are awesome btw.

 

Even a caveman can do it.

 

so you didn't have to splice any wires? But I dont have a thing to solder connectors thou...

 

so I guess whatever crutchfield gave you to install it looks good?

 

i installed one on my mazda p/u when i had it,they supply good instructions and its fairly simple to do. just changed my speakers with some of theres too. that took a lil mor eeffort casue of the tweeter and having to fabricate a bracket but it was well worth the time and effort

 

I have to crimp it? I dont have any tools for it... or they come with it from crutchfield?!

I believe you need the red ones for that small wire. Maybe a blue one for the power wire.

 

Or go get a cheap soldering iron at wal mart and some solder and practice on some scrap wire. Also get some shrink wrap if you decide to go this route. I prefer solder as it makes cleaner connections if you do it right.

Its really easy to install a head unit in our trucks. when you order a dash kit and stuff from crutchfield it comes with instructions for the install. there are also alot of install threads on here that I used to learn how to do it.

However.. i would not recommend using butt splices.. use insulated cap splices. they allow you to cram the wires in the cavity more easily.

Yes jlink is right, those are better for this application. They will even send you some if you ask.

 

I wouldnt use butt splices OR wire caps. Vibration (from driving) will eventually wiggle something loose.

IMO, just do it right the first time and solder your connections.

 

I just recently installed a Clarion CX400 that I purchased from Crutchfield. It came with the dash kit and wiring harness. It was super simple to install. I had spare time at work and soldered all the wires together (see above statement). If you buy a Clarion you get %50 off the steering wheel control interface too. I spent $234 total with shipping. Highly recommend this setup if you aren't looking for anything fancy.

It greatly improved the sound quality in my truck, even with stock speakers. The only part that threw me off track was programming the steering wheel controls.

 

so i have to buy that soldering tool to solder the connections??

Its easy, just practice first so you don't mess up on the real thing.

Maybe do a google search on soldering to get the technique down.

 

You can get a cheap butane powered one for less than 20 bucks. I'd get some shrink wrap too.
