no experience with this

Does a sub have to have its own power source or can it be ran strictly from the head unit. I have the pioneer 4200DVD and I am in desperate need of a subwooder. Ive upgraded the front with sony components and put new kenwood speakers in the rear. Thanks in advance.

 

simple answer is yes you need an amp for your sub unless it's integrated into the sub.

Honestly, it sounds like you should have a shop install your system for you. Most of this stuff is pretty simple and i figured out the basics when i was 16ish just by searching around on the web and did it all myself. And I knew nothing about cars or electronics. Judging by the fact that you're asking if a subwoofer can be powered from a head unit, you're not ready to do it yourself.

And just so you know, if you heard what you're friends subwoofers sound like and like it, the boss sub above won't sound like it. Ones like that are going to be an improvement from only speakers, but are not going to sound like a real subwoofer.

Also keep in mind that subs are not very loud in a truck cab. My sub was much louder in my old hatchback than it is in my Tacoma. It's just the way things work.

 

I really, REALLY want you to hear the system in my truck now. This thing will seriously blow your mind, don't write it off. I installed a 800w amp, 12" sub with a tuned enclosure for a guy a few months ago and he was kicking himself when he heard how much better my truck sounded, for about a quarter of what he dumped into that system.

 

Happy with my 8" JL Audio sub.

 

Until i hear one, i'm gonna be a skeptic for sure. And not all traditional setups are expensive. My sub cost like $100-140 and my amp was probably around $60-110. I don't remember the prices very well because i got them way back in 05ish and have been pounding the shit out of it ever since . It doesn't take up much space either and is very easy to remove if you want to seat 4 people in the extra cab. I should take a pic sometime.

 

I wouldn't, most that have purchased that have had bad luck with it.
I would shop around, you can get a VERY decent system for cheap.
