Stereo volume when using ipod through the AUX plug.

My head unit and speakers are still stock and overall I am happy with the sound quality. One problem I have is that when using my ipod through the aux plug, the volume is not as loud as it is when listening to just the stereo or a CD. I'm not a stereo guru but assume there is something regulating the volume of the auxilary device.

So if I want to listen to my ipod and have it just as loud as the stero, do I need to upgrade my head unit or speakers (or both)?

I had the same problem. I wound up just buying the FM Transmitter, that way it also stays fully charged.

 

Mine did that when using the ipod cable but if you just used the 3.5mm headphone jack on ipod hooked to aux then the level was fine. Either way I have to control ipod with ipod so there is no gain for me to run it on ipod cable other than to charge it. I use flash drive in usb connection on GROM box so ipod and aux cables see very little use anyway.

 

I use mine with the Aux hook up no problem. But I have to have the Ipod turned all the way up. I have a nano and a shuffle and both work good, but have to be up all the way or you can't hear anything.

 

The ipod is cranked up all the way and I'm using the 3.5 mm headphone cord. Maybe the FM transmitter is the way to go. I prefer the sound quality through the aux jack over the FM transmitter but I just don't get the volume I want.

 

I use the AUX jack and have the same issue. I have the iPod cranked and usually the stereo cranked too. Sounds fine with both jacked up, but in the summer with the windows down I would like it higher. Don't like the FM Transmitter as I don't want to deal with changing stations. Does the iPod dock thing for the changer help this at all?

 

Make sure that your max volume on the iPod is all the way up. Also, you can set the volume for the aux input on the stereo. I believe the instructions are in the owners manual.

I bought the cables that plug into the back of the stereo and charge my iPod. Then you can control the iPod from the stereo and steering wheel controls.

I had Best Buy install an expensive FM modulator that connected directly into the antenna input jack, with an aux power source. They told me it would give me the best sound. I'd have to crank the stereo to above 45 to hear it at all, and their install kept blowing fuses. When I complained, they told me "they all sound like that" and refused to credit any part of it.
I was so disgusted I ordered a Pioneer unit from Crutchfield with a USB input, based on recommendations from others on this site. For $150 they sent me a great unit, with detailed instructions for installation, the wiring harness, and the replacement trim. The sound is VERY good, even with the stock speakers. Screw Best Buy- Score Crutchfield.

 

If you are going to use the AUX input make sure that the iPod volume limit is OFF. If you still need more volume check out a booster (preamp). Google "portable headphone amp" or "Sound Shocker Pro" and you'll find plenty of info.

 

Yes, I can get it louder when using an ipod dock FM transmitter but I hate the FM static.

The volume is ok when the windows are up but when they are down it's not quite loud enough. Maybe I'm deaf.

Guess I'll start searching for a new head unit with a USB jack.

Yeah, the iPod output voltage isn't exactly high. Check what ZZT said about the limit. I'm not sure if he's talking about the iPod or the stock stereo that has that since I'm not too familiar with either.

 

I didn't know you could set the limit on the Aux input. Maybe thats it. If you can set that, then maybe mine was set high.

Just to be clear, my iPod Touch (Gen 2) has a volume limit under SETTINGS/MUSIC. I'm pretty sure this applies to most iPods. Almost all HU AUX inputs are designed for the standard AUX output like what is found in most home CD players. Portable MP3 players simply don't put out that level. That's why the volume is low vs the radio or CD.

 

Bummer. I checked my ipod volume limit and it is set to OFF. I was hoping that was the problem. No such luck.

 

try turning the sound check off on the ipod, i think its under settings, doing that increased my volume a ton.

 

Bought a new Pioneer. Problem solved.

 

Anyone figure out how to adjust this??? How does it work?

*I am asking because I did not see anything in my owners manual about ti adjusting. It just said volume can be adjusted using the vehicle's audio controls. All other adjustments must be made on the portable audio device itself.
