Audio upgrade suggestions?

Hey guys I have an 08 extended cab that's tuff to fit subs in. I don't have very much knowledge about audio and wanted peoples opinion on what I could upgrade to from a jlw3 10" with an ICBM 771 performance tecknique amp. I want something that is going to hit super hard(I had two monster 12s in my last car so comparatively loud) and clean and I want to spend around 500 bucks.
Edit: the reason I want to upgrade ia when I turn my bass up the sub get really distorted I don't know what causes that if it to much or to little power.?

Post up the specs on that amp and the exact sub you have. Is it a single or dual voice coil and what are the ohms/impedance of each coil? Also, is your sub in a sealed or ported box?

 

You need a second sub with that much power.

Amplifier, Audio line-in, Audio line-out, 2-channel, 120 Watt - 2 Ohm - 2 channel(s), 100 Watt - 4 Ohm - 2 channel(s), 240 Watt - 1 channel(s), 500 Watt and the sub is a jl 10w3v3 It doesn't say that it has a dual voice coil so I would imagine it single and how do I see if I have the 2, 4, or 8 ohm model?

 

Im a little confused... its 240 watts at 1 channel and 4 Ohms and 500 at 2 Ohms 1 channel? If you have a single 4 Ohm JL 10W3v3-4 then you will get a huge boost adding another woofer. If its a 2 Ohm version you wont gain anything at all by adding another speaker, because it will be wired to 4 Ohm load and you will lose half your power.

If the 500 watt means thats what the sub will handle and the current amp only does 240 watts max on a single channel that is just not much for a single 10W3. You need more power... and another woofer or more power and to port your current set up and add airspace.

 

How do I find out what ohm the sub is that seems like the missing factor?

 

Post a link to the amp with it's model number. And do you have a receipt for the sub? Where did you get your equipment from?

 

if you have an ohm meter cant you check the resistance between the two leads?

i talked to the people i bought it from(mission viejo autosound) and the guy said it is 4 ohm. He also said the sub is bottoming out at high volume because the amp is pushing it past its limit which is what i had thought. I think im just going to buy a 12" if that amp has the power to push it.

 

The sub isn't being pushed past its limits, it sounds like the amp is low on juice. No matter if the sub is the 4ohm or 2ohm model, they are both rated for 500 watts. And as I understand JL power ratings, they are very conservative.

First step is to take the speaker out of the box and see how it is wired, parallel or series.http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/woofer_configurations.asp?Q=1&I=42#results
If it is wired in series it will reduce the power going to the speaker, if it is wired in parallel it will maximize the power going to the speaker. Lower ohms = less resistance = more power. See if that fixes your problem.

If you want your system to hit like 2-12s, get another sub and a much bigger amp. If its just the subs running off the amp get a 800 watt mono class D amp, wire the whole setup in parallel and put a bigger power and ground to the system (4 gauge).

 

Adding a second 10" woofer will be louder than an single 12" woofer. We need to know if that amp does 500 watts at 2 Ohms or 240 watts at 2 and 4 Ohms

 

if it is the 4-ohm 10w3, it sounds like you need a new amp. if you want a REALLY noticeable increase, power it with a good 600 watt amp. not sure what kind of box you have it in right now either, but if you build a quality ported enclosure which fires the sub directly into a surface (the floor being the most desirable) your bass will more than double.

 

I have a friend with a JL 8W3 and I was very surprised on how well it sounds and it is pretty loud. You might want to look at subs at an audio shop to compare. Good luck.
