sub turns off randomly

800 rms pioneer champion pro 10" sub, and an 800 rms kenwood amp. Had all this installed about a week and all of a sudden my sub starts turning off randomly. This happens with all genres of music. Ideas??

 

The only time when my sub turns off is when I crank it too high and it trips the amp's breaker...you might want to see if your amp or any of the wires are getting grounded out somewhere.

 

Does it happen after an extended playing time when the amp has had time to get hot or does this happen all the time?

 

does it happen at louder volumes? You may be clipping your amp, which means that your sub is asking the amp to produce more power then it can actually produce

My sub is a 10" pioneer champion pro. Both the amp and sub are 800rms. I don't know how that amp could be not supplying enough power. Could it potentially be my battery?
I checked the ground and other wiring, with the exception of remote wire for now due to lighting, and it was all good.
Was listening to it last night and as I turned my truck on it was hitting, but a few minutes later into a sound that hit hard I turned the volume up and it crapped out. After turning the volume back down low it would hit once or twice then go off and hit again randomly.

 

Just noticed that one of the 2 lights on the amp goes out when the subs not hitting. Also I don't think my subs wired like that, I'm using both left terminals if I remember correctly. Thoughts?

 

Sounds like the amp is going into protection, I would bet you have a voice coil on its way out...Is the amp gain turned all the way up?

 

you are using the two speaker output connections on the left? That means you have both postive connections hooked up to your amp double check that make sure that is not the case, that alone can mess up your amp

 

Dno what that means lol. But my settings on my amp aren't even half way.

 

My guess is your sub isn't wired like this....it should be. Make it so and then report back.

 

Stupid question- I'm guessing the wire in the middle is a bridge. Since its going from pos to neg, what kind of wire do I use lol? Just a piece of one of the joined pos/neg wire roll? Lol idiotic question.

 

Wire has no actual charge denoted by it's design. The color is just the insulation and is meant as an identifier only so you don't get the wires all mixed up.

Short form, use any piece of wire you want as long as it's something like 16gauge or thicker.

 

Wires all set up correctly now. It will hit for about 15 seconds into the song, then the lights on the amp start to dim and flicker then go out, ending the show.

 

is the amp overheating?

 

Well even when it was doing fine the headlights would dim when it hit. So you think its the alternator? What about the battery?

 

It can't be overheating because when I got it it would be fine playing for over an hour. Now I can turn it on after the whole night and as soon as I up the volume it craps out.

 

x2. kinda sounds like your amp is overheating

 

could be a voltage issue, if you have a multimeter, when the amp is actually powered up stick your leads on the ground and battery connections see what it reads when the amp kicks off.... if it reads little to no voltage you may need a new fuse on your power wire, have seen that before or it could be a weak ground. Or it could possible be that your amp has an issue inside of it

 

if you still have good voltage (12-14) volts on the input of the amp when it kicks out, unplug the rca and speaker connections and turn it back on and see if it shuts off on you if it does then there is a short inside the amp itself

 

Not sure on the alternator considering I got the truck a month ago. I don't have any of those tools either. Would a new alternator be a good idea? Ill prob get a cap too but id rather solve this in the least expensive way possible lol.
