So, I bought the Sound Ordnance 8" compact powered sub today from Crutchfield. OK deal at $179 with free wiring kit and free shipping. I just couldn't commit to any of the double dins in the $300 price range though. I have 2 main requirements: name brand and rear USB input.

    I almost bought this one:
    http://www.crutchfield.com/s_105KWXR810/JVC-KW-XR810.html?search=double+din+car+stereo

But JVC just seems like a cheap brand to me, and I don't love the looks.

Any leads on a Kenwood/Alpine or similar double din HU with rear USB for around $300? Maybe I'm asking too much!

    Look at build!
not sure if you've heard of them but Planet Audio makes some nice stuff and i used to rock one of their DD that was a 7" touch with flip out screen that had the DVD, SD card, and usb port on the back.

heres a link to the one i had, never had any issues with it at all even had a ps2 hooked up to it at one point when i took a pretty long trip! I thought it was a great radio for the price!

I just bought my Pioneer App Radio Double DIN headunit from bestbuy a week ago and getting it installed tomorrow with my dash kit.

From what I have read and watched, the app radio is really good with iPhones and is at a very reasonable price at $400.

Seriously? I haven't even looked at audio since about 2003 when I outfitted my Mustang. I guess I should look into this one, because it's priced right and has the features I want. If only it didn't say JVC on the front.

Look at the AVH-3300 BT by Pioneer. Can get a good price on Amazon for under $300. It's what I plan on getting...

    Thanks, I'll check it out!

It's funny how much cheaper single-din receivers are. They just don't look very good in our trucks in my opinion.

Still looking for more opinions if anyone else has one!

I had a jvc double din and it was great. Worked perfect the whole time, Durable hard to scratch or break screen, Lots of washboard dirt roads miles with it. The only thing i would complain about is it was a little behind on features but i wouldnt use the features that were missing so it wasnt a big deal. Bottom line I would buy another one.

pioneer 2300 is the way to go. only get the 3300 if you'll regularly use the bluetooth, which might not even work that great.

I can't speak to JVC double DIN, but I offer that my son had one of their single DIN video/DVD players in his car through 5 years of college life at the U of Florida - still working when we sold the car for $500 (it - the car and stereo - had definitely seen better days).

Just bought one of these, plus a steering wheel adapter to go with my powered sub. Sweet, low profile looks - not too flashy - rear USB input so the iphone goes in the glovebox - lots of output power and a cool interface.

Only downside is no bluetooth but I can deal with that. I literally use about 30 minutes of cell phone time per month. :D

Thanks for all the help guys.

Good deal for sure sicotic. I really wanted rear usb input though, and I have zero use for a DVD player. I really like the understated looks of the Kenwood. Plus I already bought it. ;)

The 4300 does have rear input USB. That is why I am going with that one eventually. Amazon has the best price I've found. Sonicelectronix upped their price from 359.99 to 420 in the last week, so I think Amazon won't be far behind.

It does have rear USB. and most double din units are dvd players or Navigation receivers.

What did you end up purchasing? And Congrats.

Oh, right on then. I was looking at your link on my iPhone and it took me to the neutered Amazon mobile site. Hard to see all the details there.

I ended up buying a Kenwood KIV-701. It's a single DIN with a little 3" screen for display. I really like the looks, we'll see how she sounds. Picked up the steering wheel adapter at the same time.

You gonna get a back up camera... I see it works with one. What a tiny screen that would be

Already have one in the magic rearview mirror. :) Factory option on my SR5.

    Stolen photo from here:

    http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o282/jtav2002/Tacoma/IMG00013-20101121-1244.jpg

I'm going black kit becuase I think it'll still go with the truck's interior but will minimize the "kit" part of the single-din plate.
