Thinking about building a sub box for my wifes 2012 double cab. It will go behind the passenger side back seat. It will have about .70 cubic ft air space. I am looking at using a JL Audio 500/1V2 500 watt mono amp. As for the sub I am looking at the memphis audio 15-SC12D4 12" shallow 3" mount depth sub or the alpine SWR-T12 12" shallow 3.5" mount depth sub. Ya'll think this would give me some good clean decent bass? I will be removing the 60% plastic storage behind the seat. I want to keep the storage behind the driver side. Is this a good set up and out of the 2 subs which would sound better or should I go with a 10"? I don't want to have to mod the back seat?

I am not at home to look, but IIRC, the 10" Type R think works wonderfully in a .7cf box, where the 12" version looks much better with a bigger box.

If you already have the amp, use it. If not, you can get a lot of amp in a smaller package - this could give you the extra air space needed for the 12" version, fi you wanted to run that.

The Type R has a lot of R&D behind it, and looks like a fantastic sub. It would get my nod over the Memphis.

I don't have a amp or speaker yet, so I am open to suggestions. I do want the smallest amp possible to mount next to the sub and put out 400-500 watts rms.

Whats your budget for the amp and sub? The JL 500/1 is not a very compact amp and in my opinion there are other amps that fit your requirements a little better.

$500-$700 what are some other options? I kind of like the arc audio KS500.1 mini.

Look at the newer class D amps, Alpine PDX and the JL Audio XD lines come to mind, but there are a lot more with small footprints. Cruise through a website such as Crutchfield or Sonicelectronicx. There are some lines such as Massive Audio that produce longer/thinner amps, only you can know how much space you will have.

I don't have any experience with the Arc Audio amps but, I can recommend the JL XD 600 or Alpine Pdx M6. Both of those amps have a relatively small footprint. I would also take Matt's suggestion of the alpine type r. I heard one a couple of days ago and was impressed. Even paying retail you would remain within your budget, but search around and you can find some good deals.

Edit:^^^ Beat me to it. Those were my thoughts exactly.

A couple things to remember - The Type R thin is only available in Single 4 ohm configuration, so a 2 channel bridged is your best bet (assuming you are not doing a 4 channel for front speakers...)

At the prices you are looking I would probably hit up Sonic Electronix.

    Get the Type R (10 is $250, 12 is $290)
    then choose the amp.

I would consider: (power at 4 ohm)

    Polk PA d2000.2 - $250, 500w, 7" x 8"
    JL XD 600/1 - $300, 400w, 8.5" x 7"
    Alpine PDX 1.600/M6,$300, 600w, 10.5 x 8"

All of those should be around the same price, all a bit less than the 500/1, and all smaller in size.

For the box, I would make it as big as possible, do a small inset area in the corner for the amp, and run the 12" if you can get over 1 cubic ft, and throw in some polyfil.

I want to say I remember the 12 looking good around 1.2 cf, but I would have to get home this evening to double check. Or someone else with WinISD can run it. Or Steven may chime in with some info from the software he uses, if he is around.

I looked at the alpine pdx1.600 and really like the looks and size of it and it puts out 600watts @ 2ohm or 4ohm.

The type R thin 12 looks pretty good in 1 cf or higher. I really would prefer 1.25 or so, which should be do-able on that side.

i have the alpine 10" type r shallow mount with a jl 900 watt 5 channel (400/4 500/1) hd amp and works perfect more than decent amount of sound i would say. sub fits perfect behind the seats and amp under the seat. this thing hits pretty hard for a flapjack

one 12 with a 1000watt amp would sound good, Kicker makes a clean pro comp 12. and the amp you could go rockford fostgate or 500d memphis amp. Are you looking to run your speakers through the amp?

the headunit is the shiz....i only got one type r 10" this little sub has gots some juice in it!! and the little amp powers 500w to the sub and 100w to each door speaker. ideally yeah 2 subs will hit harder but 1 will hit deeper. this box is specifically made for 1 type r shallow mount but i guess if u want 2 u could always get a bigger box to go all the way up to the top of the seat headrest.
