**If you do not want to read the story below about why I am here and asking this question go to the end of the post**
Ok i have never put in my own audio equipment before and my last vehicle was the first I ever had gutted out and replaced everything and included a sub. It got me addicted to having a well rounded audio experience. I had a crappy 10 in a ported box and it did the job at first. Made me happy but about a year later after talking with friends and listening to more high end systems I could see it lacked quality base. I am now a proud owner of a 2011 Tacoma and my only dislike is the stock system...
I live at Ft. Riley, KS and am a soldier. As all shop owners know soldiers are young, stupid and often have a lot of deployment money to blow. I was referred to a guy who said he could put in a new head unit and low end 12in sub in a shallow box (pre-made) and have a decent bass response for $600. Considering I had my last system installed for $950 with a custom box and great customer service I refuse to work with this guy. He is also against me wanting two 8in in separate boxes (I heard its best this way in case one blows the other isn't affected.)
With all this being said I want to install myself, we have a community garage with certified mechanics and all the tools you need for about $5 a day. They help you out and have any tool you can imagine plus a ton of car lifts to get under with ease . I want to do this on my own and get the experience. I also want to do it right. However I do not intend on dropping 1k in a day...i would like to only use the money I have left over in my pay check and not cut into my savings. around $200 a month. I am willing to add a little to buy a sub and a box together.
I want to put the sub and amp under the bench seat. After browsing for a few hours the other day I came across this box http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130DSW1...ch=shallow+box . I was told that down firing is the best for quality? I have not been able to measure to see if it can fit (single soldier in the barracks, I have little to no tools =( and no room for them). They make similar cases for a 10" and a 8".
Should I be looking at a sub and box first or a new Head unit? Should I just make a box or have one custom made? The speakers are ok for me at the time and wont mind doing those last. Just not as loud as I would like. Also one 12" or two 8" or 10" (one under each seat, amp on the back wall). I do not want to have the world feeling my bass! I want to be able to listen to some dubstep the way it was intended to be and be able to switch on some dave mathews.
I am patient and the process will be slow. I will order parts when I am confident to do so and I hope you guys can make this process smooth and fast .
