Vibration test for sound deadeners - Link inside

Came across this while reading about sound deadening, not sure if it's a repost but here it is.

So would it be true to assume most products like fatmat/rattletrap and dynamatt are asphalt based?

 

Looks like a good test from what I scanned really quick. I'll read up on it later when I'm not headed out to a meeting.

In the product description for whatever you're buying just look for "butyl rubber based" somewhere in there and you should be ok.

 

Turns out my meeting is 30 min later than I thought.

Had a chance to look at the test data. It doesn't surprise me that the CLD does much much better. And yes I know who makes that product. It wasn't hard to figure out. That's why I use his stuff.

 

That guy, he makes some good stuff. I like it. Not quite a showdown of sound deadeners, this little test, but some good info.

 

My friend chipped in and ordered me some rattletrap for my birthday. I just called Fatmat and they said that I would have to go with Megamat for a 100% butyl based compound. I'll have to get my buddy to change the order if that's the case.

Most of this is all new to me so I've spent hours reading while at work and at home. The girlfriend started to get a little annoyed, by saying that she is going to join a pontiac sunfire site and go on that all the time lol!
So back to my question, is there a big difference between the CLD tiles listed on SDS, Second Skin, RAAMmat BXT II or Fatmat MegaMat?

They are all butyl and look very similar, am I missing something here?

 

Adhesive strength and longevity as well as foil and substrate thickness.

 

Those are exactly the things I have been thinking about, I'm planning on having my truck until it dies which coule be another 20 years. The thing I worry most about is putting a product on and having it fall off 5 years down the road. Too much of a hassle to think that some products could fall off the door skin. Unfortunately all of the websites say things like "We're the best" and "Best adhesion".

 

The first three are all similar and very good products. MegaMat is the closest thing FatMat has created to a competitive product, but from what I saw the foil was significantly thinner.

Use Raam, SDS or Second Skin and you will be happy.

 

Great link/write up. I just cant help to wonder how these results would differ on a piece of sheet metal that is not just "hung". I mean, even our thin, stamped truck parts are at least secured on all edges. Would the results be closer, or the very same? Just a thought. And, I'm not knocking the practice of deadening at all.

 

Agreed. I've used the last two with success. I currently use SDS products.

 

Appreciate the advice guys. I will see what fatmat's return policy is for items not yet picked up. Have you ever run into those CLD tiles coming loose over a longer period of time? What I'm hoping for is if the surface is prepped properly it will last the life of the truck.

From what I've read I think think the same basic concept applies speaking of panel resonance. It makes sense to me that a panel that is "hung" like the one in the test would resonate more than a secured piece of metal such as a door skin.

 

I had some of the (discontinued) Second Skin "SPL" tiles (Anthony, the owner at the time was trying to play on the SDS tile success) come off pretty easy.

Never an issue with the SDS tiles.


The secured panel will "ring" a little less, but it is still an optimal place for vibrations and noise - like a drum head. You are lowering the resonant frequency of the metal, not eliminating it completely.

That is why a good product like the SDS tiles are recommended at 25% coverage on large flat areas. The formed steel (ridges or bends) take out the ability to vibrate, and you dont need full coverage when the product does its job in lowering the vibrations.

 

Yeah, I understand all that. I would just like to see the exact same test on a Tacoma door and compare the results to the findings in the original test.

Bikinpunk is a mod over on DIYMA, and Rudeboy is Don, the owner of SDS, and he sent the stuff to Xtremerevolution to test, though he didnt really do it. Don is also Rudeboy on DIYMA, and is a great help if you ask questions.
