Sounds good. I love both of those amps that you linked and own the Kenwood KAC8105D and love it.

How much performance would I be losing by not hooking up those speakers to an amp?

    Rear speakers, worth it?

You'll lose some volume and rear speakers depend on how you like it I have only front speakers to simulate a "front stage" so that all the music is coming from the front the only way to tell if you like this is to fade your speakers all the way up and ride around like that for a while if you don't the you can get a set of co-axles to put back there.

Will a different HU help power the speakers better?

A set of rear speakers is not that much Boston Acoustics SE50 $70. These come with tweaters but arent the tweaters on the front door? Not sure what you mean by run a set of co-axles.

A co-axle is a speaker with the tweeter and woofer in one package rather than having to mount a tweeter and a woofer you just mount the whole thing and done. Most all head units will run about 20 rms if you see anything that is outrageously, say 50w, higher then it is either peak wattage or a lie.

That sounds good but I'd stay away from Sony Xplode stuff as most of it is trash everything else I'd put in my truck.

So as of now, this is my plan (and what do you know, under $1,000):

    -Speakers: Polk Audio DXi 650s

    or

    -Sub: JL Audio 10W3v3-2

Still contemplating the HU and sub???? Will hold off on rear speakers for now.

With 1 10" I believe I would only have to lose the storage behind the single seat in the rear. If so, where is a good place to put the amp? Under driver seat? Mounted on anything?

You may want to carpet up a piece of ply wood big enough to put the amp on and screw into the back of the box and make an amp rack but under the seat would work good it's just that when I have passengers I worry about them kicking a wire loose or if it's been raining or we've been on the beach I worry about crap getting in the amp.

    1. If I got all of the above items, an amp wiring kit and the bracket/mount for the HU, am I good to go? Is there anything else I need for installation?

    2. Also when I put the Polk Audio DXi 650s in the cart it says, not recommended for your vehicle??

    3. What about the 12" Polk Audio MM1240 instead of the 10" JL Audio 10W3v3-2. It is 4Ohm, does that matter? Or how about the 12" Alpine SWS-1223D?

If you are wanting to run sub amp only, and not add an amp to power the speakers, you open up a new level of options, as your budget can go to different items.

Any of your choices will be an improvement over stock, except in the speaker area. If you do not properly treat the doors, expect a decrease in output and midbass. But a sub will help a little here.

My idea of a budget install would normally be something like:

Head unit - $300 (the one you link above from Amazon)
wiring kit - $65 Knu from Amazon
Door treatments - $85 should cover some CLD tiles from SDS, along with a few bucks to seal up the holes in the doors, and a bit of foam for rattles. front takes priority. No MLV or blocking layer, but sealing doors will help a ton.

At this point we are at $450, with mandatory items. That leaves $550.

Box - $90 - (I would build my own to save $$ here, but thats up to you)

Sub - $80 I would do some modeling with subs I trust, but off the top of my head, a JBL GTO would get the nod.

Amp for speakers/sub - $200 - This ought to buy you a nice 4 channel in the 80-100WPC range. I have seen Kenwood XR4S amps go for this amount

speakers - I would get something like the Pioneer TSD1720C components ($120), but there are lots of used options that would retail in the $300-$500 range that can be found used for ~$200 or less.

Run stock rear speakers off the deck.

do a 4 channel, front speakers amped, rears bridged to sub.

Simple, clean, MUCH better sound than running drivers off deck power.

Either way you go, have fun.

I am going to be building a system for my wifes tacoma soon and I am looking at the 12" Polk Audio MM1240. It has really good reviews from different web sites I have looked at. Think I can get the airspace it needs on the passenger side. I will build my own box.

Model it up in a program like Bass Box Pro, or even WinISD.
