Well I have a Pioneer X920BT and I am very satisfied with it. I have also installed a Pioneer AVH-P4400BH in my sister's tacoma and it performs well. I don't have a lot of experience with other manufacturers.

I've ran Alpine, Pioneer, and now Kenwood in the Taco and never had an issue with any of those brands. The last double DIN unit I owned was a Pioneer. I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the main brands. Just comes down to what features you want. With no specific budget, the possibilities are endless. Even most single DIN HU's have direct ipod control as well as satellite radio. So I'd imagine most double DIN's are going to have that as well. My single DIN unit will control any USB device. Really comes down to if you want to shell out a few extra bucks for something with navigation then.

Think about it like this... Your head unit is where all the magic begins. The better the head unit the better the signal is going to your speakers, now with that let me say this, no head unit can do great things with factory speakers. It is like your PC, it controls everything. It doesn't matter if you have the best monitor in the world, if your PC tower is junk then the rest is no better.

Sure. You could do that. To be perfectly honest though, your truck won't sound any better except for maybe a little bit less distortion at really high volumes. You are currently limited by the power output of your stock head unit. If you replace all of the speakers now though you will have a good baseline and equipment to handle the power of a head unit.

Well with all my time in the navy and on motorcycles I don't know if I notice how good it would sound. I just wanted a little more volume for the windows down days
