hey guys, i'm looking at upgrading the speakers in my 04 tacoma and am looking at the alpine type S and the JL audio TR series. the alpine is what the guy at the shop personally liked and is a little less expensive than the JL audio, but i've heard nothing but good things about JL and they have a pretty solid reputation.

has anybody used either speaker or have any valuable input?

    thanks

Honestly you get what you pay for when it comes to speakers. I installed some S's in a buddies jeep and didn't like them once they got to a certain volume.

JL ALL DAY. JL is top of the line no matter what they make. Quality audio and you pay the price for it.

JL is not top of the line.

They are well known and make a decent product, with good dealer support, and some fan boys.

This is one of those times I would recommend you spend some time visiting different shops, listening to what they have, and getting what you like.

Quality wise, Alpine speakers dont impress me, but neither does much in the JL lineup.

Both will greatly improve with a good door treatment and proper install.

    Good luck.

A lift, some wheels, some tires, some performance, some cosmetic and then audio.
Are you going to run a external amp to those?

not planning on it at the moment. i will be running an alpine head unit to power them. i've toyed with the external amp but just don't think it's in the current budget.

Around $26,000 worth of unleaded in the fuel tank.
If the choice is Alpine or JL component speakers, I'd take the Alpine. JL has better amps though.

Alpine speakers are not that good imo. Check polk or infinity too. They make some great components for pretty reasonable cost. I run polks in my tundra and they sound great. Look for a higher sensitivity rating if you are not going to amplify them.

Alpine speakers were no good until recently. I don't know what they did, but they sound really good. JL has great woofers, even the Chinese ones are not bad, but the component sets were just not so great.

I put 6x9 type S coaxials in my front doors and the stock HU was not enough to run them well. Basically no bass. When I moved to my Kenwood media receiver, they sounded much much better. Still, they sound the best cranked up. I might eventually amp them just so they have enough power at lower levels.

All in all, well worth the $80 or whatever I paid for the pair, and I'd buy them again for another economy build.
