Home-made baffle plates (used King Starboard this time, but have also used Corian with great success) and yes, they are in the doors. With the Seas RNX motors I had to fit a 1" thick baffle to clear the window - provided just so you know that a 1" baffle will work.

your options are slim without mods, with mods anything is possible. My doors on my 2nd gen, 6 1/2 & 5 1/4.

Fitted a Polk DB6501 system to my RC.
I mounted the crossover to the door behind the arm rest.

Glad I put it there... having issues with my high frequency hearing so I set the x-overs for +3db on the tweeter... it ended up being too "crispy" and shrill and I couldn't mellow it with the EQ in the HU.
I was able to pop the door panels and reach in to flip the switch to "0db" without removing the whole panel.

Fiberglass. Youtube should be overflowing with vids on making speaker pods.

so, the idea of going active has been stewing in my mind since I had created this thread, and as of now, looks like I will start out with a component set up front, and a sub. question is, will the components I listed above be enough for a minimal active setup?

    HU - Pioneer 80prs
    amp - zed leviathan
speakers - starting to look at separate pieces, straying away from the HAT 6x9's if I can find good prices on separates.

these both have good crossover range, but I think someone had mentioned that I should get a processor that has one input so I could branch out, and would have even better control over the freq range. could someone name a couple of these items?

just thought I'd give a little update.

I'm still stock, as there hasn't been a dash kit created for the '12s, and I dont want to mickey mouse the install with something that doesnt quite fit right

last note, when looking at partsexpress, etc, the specs for the speakers are for 8 ohms. this pretty much cuts the amps power in half, correct? the impedance(from 4ohm to 8 ohm) shouldnt have a factor in selecting an ampliflier?

You can. Buy a cheap cutting board from walmart or comparable store use the old speaker rings to mark your boundaries and cut it out.

I actually chatted with Mr Marv, and I'm hoping he'll make some for me when I'm ready. I'm definitely gonna get one of his sub boxes, since he is revered here on TDub.

so just an update on my selection of drivers.

Im thinking of these for the fronts:
    SEAS Excel W18NX-001 7"
    Legatia L1 Pro R2 tweets

Im thinking this combo because both drivers have good crossover overlap coverage giving my options instead of being stuck at one or two points. a pretty penny, but I dont plan on ripping my doors apart more than I have to.

thanks again for the tips, and I will update this thread once I get everything installed(in a couple of months... wallet is a little flat...)

Why not stick with HAT and use the Legatia L6V1 or V2?

dylan - I didnt even consider those mids. I progressively made it up to the seas mids, and started looking for tweets and ended up deciding on those. when it comes down to it, it will be all about price, since I had seen a scratch and dent sale from an authorized HAT dealer on the net, was just too late to grab anything.

If you can wait, I would hold off for another scratch and dent sale. The authorized dealer you are talking about is actually the owner of HAT. I bought my L6's from that sale and they look brand new!

How much are you paying for each set if you don't mind me asking? I think you can get similar performance for a WHOLE lot less.

The Peerless Exclusive 7" mid is a fantastic choice. npdang on DIYMA (when that site was still useful) has done a considerable amount of testing on various mids. He found those to be top notch. They're less than half the cost of the seas drivers. I'm sure the seas drivers are great but I'm not sure how well they perform in the car.
    http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/peerless-woofers-6-7/peerless-830883-exclusive-nomex-7-woofer/

The tweeters you're using are nice but very VERY expensive. I think you could get away with something much cheaper and still have incredible sound. These Vifa 1" tweeters are STELLAR and play very low. You'll be able to cross them over in a variety of places. They are fairly small too so mounting shouldn't be a concern.

PS: I already know what your next post is going to be. "Those are priced way less than the stuff I was looking at so there's no way it's the same caliber." And the truth of the matter is that it's absolutely the same caliber. When you start picking your own drivers you quit believing all the marketing hype and start learning to read the spec sheets. That's when things REALLY start to get interesting. ;)
