Pioneer Radio Question

Can anyone confirm that a DEH-P7000BT could read and play MP3's off of a 250 Gig Portable Hard Drive that doesn't require an external power source?

 

I really got to say I'm some what disappointed I thought I would have gotten a response by now.

 

What kind of port on the Pioneer will you be hooking the portable drive to?

 

USB Port.

 

You won't get enough current out of a USB port to power any 3.5" external nor a 250GB 2.5" external drive. Biggest drive I've seen powered solely by a USB port is a 100GB 2.5 inch drive, and even it was a tad flaky. You're gonna need to power that external somehow else.

 

So what if I put in a 4 port powered USB adapter and connected that device to a power inverter?

Getting kind of crazy now!!!

Or use a power inverter to power a 3x5 hard drive and connect that straight to the head unit?

Your best bet is to not use an external HD. They are not typically built to withstand the shocks associated with driving. I'd recommend going with an iPod or other MP3 player (or solid state HD if you can find one).

 

I have a Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD with the iPod cable. I just bought a iPod Classic, 120GB capacity. It will hold 30,000 songs. I'm good for life.

 

Yeah I was trying to not by an IPOD. I've already got the hard drive and I'm planning to get the radio soon. I still have to order the bezil and all But I hear everyone saying you can hook thumbdrives to these things and they will work and I was thinking if it can run and charge an IPod then maybe just maybe it would work.

 

the pioneer usb port DOES NOT output enough power to run a hard drive (it actually says this in the instruction manual), it will work if you power the hard drive from a different power source, and it WILL NOT work if you use a powered hub... the drive may get power but the deck will not be able to see any devices through the hub (also stated in the manual). i recommend either a large usb flash drive, or an ipod. if your external drive does have a second plug for an secondary power source then you will need to use it, but due to moving parts something solid state (flash drive or memory card) will last you much longer

side note... if your external drive does have a secondary power option (some drives have dual usb cables, one for power and one for communication) it might be possible to hook it up to a powered hub and use the hub for power only with the comm usb into the deck, but they do make some devices that is a usb port cig lighter adapter (for power only) which would be much simpler than trying to wire a hub, but this will only work if your drive uses dual usbs

 

I also have a flash drive hooked up to the USB port on the radio. It reads and plays great, but is limited to 100 GB...I think. The iPod is easier to manage in my opinion. The files appear in the order you want on your PC, but I have no clue what the radio is doing, as nothing is in order. I think it goes by creation date of the file. You may have the same issue with the hard drive you want to hook-up.

 

i'll have to check the manual again, too lazy right now, but i kinda remember something about a 100gb limit... and the other references i made to the manual are also from memory so i could be wrong on those so you may want to double check
