New to Tacoma World and looking for suggestions...

Hello all....

I just joined Tacoma World yesterday and just bought my new 09 Tacoma TRD 4X2 on Saturday and I really love it. Yesterday I had leather seats installed and they are sweet!!!

While I like my truck now I have always been one of those guys who has to fiddle with the stereo and the stock system is pretty sad so I plan to make some upgrades. My last car was a 2003 Audi A4 Quattro and I removed a lot of the stereo from that car before trading it in so I have some equipment that I would like to use again if possible. Here is a list of the equipment I have:

JL Audio 300/2 Amp (300 watts)
Alpine MRP-M350 Amp (200 watts mono)
JL Audio VR650-CSI (6 1/2 componet speakers)
JL Audio 8W3v2 8" sub

I had to give up the head unit so I need to replace that and I have been looking at the Alpine IVA-W205 but I think most of this stuff I would use again. The one concern I have is that my sub might be to deep to be able to mount in a cutom box behind the seat. I may end up replacing the sub but I honestly don't want to get into to big of a sub where my amp won't be able to do the job and I have to replace it too although I believe it will push 350 watts if I ran it at 2 ohms.

Any thoughts about the Alpine head unit?

The Alpine would be a great choice if it has the features you desire/need and the rest of that system should be VERY nice as long as it is installed/tuned properly!

When I had the 8" sub in my Audi I had it in a custom fiberglass ported enclosure so I would assume that I would want to build an enclosure with a port as well. Can you build me something like that along with an amp rack to mount next to it? If so what would something like that run?

I don't do fiberglass Jay but I can build you something nice for back there. Was there a specific reason you chose a ported enclosure?

 

No reason, I just had it built at a stereo shop and thats what they built, the encloure doesn't need to be fiberglass. Would that sub perform better in a sealed enclosure?

Depends on your definition of "better" . I personally prefer the 8W3v2 in a sealed enclosure however you will be the one listening to it! Is there anything about how it sounded in your previous system that you felt could be improved upon?

I would have to say if anything I just wish it had a little more ump to it. In the Audi the enclosure was in the trunk where i will be in the cab this time so that might help a little. I was also thinking about buying the JL Audio 10W3v3-2 and run that at 2 ohms compared to my 8" running at 4 ohms. With the 2 ohm load my amp would generate 350 watts compared to 200 watts at 4 ohm which I think would make a HUGE difference. When it comes to base I like a tighter base.

 

Since you mentioned you would have liked more "ump" to it and you like tighter base I'd say a sealed enclosure would be best in your situation (you will receive a fair amount of "free bass" in the way of cabin gain with the sub inside the truck) Also. moving up to a 10 and nearly doubling the power will definitely make a huge difference. Is it possible for you to send me pictures of the rear area in your truck so I can see if there is any difference compared to the '08?
