I am attempting to do this without a head unit as well. I purchased a Clarion EQ to boost the signal and split it properly to my amp, from my tablet/phone. I haven't had a chance to use it yet but I will soon! :)

    vvvvv this vvvvv

They are 9.59" x 7.41", and they say at least .25" can be removed from all sides. I did some measuring and I think this would be perfect for our dash size if you wanted a pre-made tray and cover solution to be integrated into a dash kit. They are $149.99 from Mobile Solutions and include the magnetic cover.

Their website has just a few photos of a Maserati install. Facebook page has many more photos and a video of how it all works.

I watched the video and saw the pictures. I am not overly impressed. I think the cable would flop around inside as they dont actually have it mount. You have to pull it out, plug it in and then push the iPad in, then drop the magnetic bezel over.

I want something where it is super flush, the magnets are under already and my lightning connector is hard fixed. i simply slide in the iPad to have the lightning connector go in, then tilt the iPad mini in and wham it locks in. flush clean look. I'd probably opt for the stereo behind it and just go USB to the stereo, since that seems easiest.

    So I wait...

I'm sure I'm like others on here with what is wanted. This is a nice development to see, but the stuff from SOUNDMANCA and Soundwaves of Tampa are great solutions from all I can see. Obviously I know I can find a shop to do something similar, but I am optimistic in time we'll have a more repeatable solution than the one-off completely custom implementations that have been done so far.

So yeah thanks to you all for your work, I'll keep watching this thread.

Yeah I want what all you guys want as well but the reason shops charge $6-700+ is because is not a simple job as I have proved (to myself at least haha)

Yeah, I've had a couple people ask if I could build them one like I built but it's just not worth the time and effort to me, especially the way I built it. A homemade vacuum forming machine and some molds would be perfect for a little mass production. :D
