Pair of 12's in a single cab..what else can I do?

Just got my system installed today from my old truck.

Only minor hitch is the 12" subs (pair) bump the seat up a little bit. I knew they would of course, but part of it is that damn latch to move the seatback up is hitting. Each is in a separate standard truck box, not a custom.

So what I'm wondering is..

Obviously going to 10"s may give me enough room, depending if the boxes are thinner.

I have them on the corners right now..is there another way to mount them without rearranging stuff like removing the jack and whatnot?

Free air speakers? Perhaps I'm wrong on the name but they don't need an enclosure?

something else?

Polk 12"s. They are in boxed that are 7.25 deep at top, 8 inches deep bottom, 15 inches tall, 19.25 inches long.

Do the shallow subs require an enclosure, or are they the free air kind? And do they sound as good as the boxed?

They would still have a box they just have much less depth therefore you'll have a much thinner enclosure.

What would be a good example of one? Right now I'm running 300x2 for the subs so I don't want to buy something that can't handle that

Just check out Crutchfield or any other audio site there are a bunch of shallow mounts on the market. I only run an 8" JL myself but the box is probably about 6" or less in depth.

Modify the box to accommodate the latch by making a pocket with fiberglass into the sub box. You could grind off the jack mount and put it in a small toolboox of your choosing if you need more room.

A shallow mount sub will never be as loud as a real boxed sub. However 2 12 inch kicker shallow mounts were extremely loud in my access cab.. Top of the box was maybe 3 or 4 inches deep and the bottom probably 6 or 7? I think that would be a good setup for you. Check amazon for 12 inch kicker shallow mounts.

I guess I could go 10s if I can find a narrower enclosure. Not sure I want to go *cringe* 8 though..

You should be able to fit larger shallow mounts fine. Although come from a 12" in a huge ported box in my previous vehicle I was pleasantly surprised with the 8. Granted I'm no audiophile and could care less about having something extremely loud that can be heard several cars away. I was just looking for good clean bass and it doesnt take much when its in the cab with you. Really depends in what youre goin for.

Rockford P3 Shallow 10s will handle 300 watts fine. I'm running a JL 250/1 on mine and it doesn't complain.
