supercrewsound box didn't fit too well

Spent the evening installing it. I had to use a dremel to shave almost 1/2" off the plastic piece on other side. Also, the jl 10w3v3 didn't fit right so I used a card board from the jl box to raise it

 

Wait, you just fit a W3 in a double cab behind the seat?

Did you order the extra mounting depth? If everything measures up as SCS set's then it should fit with minimal work and that would be just sanding out the mounting diameter.

 

I ordered the extra depth. Also told them what sub I was using. This morning, I used black caulking sealant around the perimeter to seal any holes from the cardboard.

 

A 10w3 does not fit behind the seat without the compromise of many other things.

1: the mounting depth of the box must be expanded but routing out the back panel where the magnet is. This results in your 3/4" MDF now being only 1/4" or less, which is severely weakened. It may not hold up to the pressure of a w3 behind the magnet. The wood is way too thin.

2: the plastic panel on the back of the seats must be removed. Most people don't mind this, BUT, the sub will still hit up against the metal supports in the back of the seat. This limits woofer excursion, and also puts a lot of negative strain on the sub. It will eventually tear your cone to shreds pretty quickly. It will also put stress on the woofer ans could blow a coil or cause your woofer to seize up. It will definitely do damage. This is assuming that it doesn't rattle the box apart first.

3: a cardboard spacer..... no offense but I'm speechless. I know you said you sealed it, but the amount of pressure that this sub creates inside that tiny box will blow through a sealant pretty quick. Cardboard is not solid and will compromise mounting durability, box construction, subwoofer stability, and the seal of the sub in the box. This is a major no no. I highly recommend rethinking that design modification. Besides, cardboard collapses with pressure. If you put a piece (even 2 layers) between the sub and box, once the screw the sub down right, that cardboard is going to crush and leave you with no more than 1/8th of spacer. If you put anymore than that, then the entire first half of this point #3 of mine is only made more true and problems are way worse. Should have used 1/4" MDF spacer... but then the sub wouldn't fit anymore...

4: the only proper way to fit a w3 behind a double cab seat is to make custom seat mount brackets that move the bench seat forward atleast 1+ inches.

IMO, if you spend the money on a nice sub like the JL 10W3, you should have done the install correctly. I'm glad you got it to fit, and don't take this as me bashing you, I'm simply trying to give you a heads up that your setup is major flawed. Its not a matter of IF this damages your sub and/or box, but WHEN. I strongly encourage you to redo the mickey mouse cardboard spacer design, and consider seat relocate brackets so you can use the right size box that is capable of handling a sub of that nature. This is going to sound really bad (for a JL) because the box is too small and too weak, and the excursion limits are being pressed on.

Just my .02 cents. Again, don't take this as me talking shit, I'm just trying to help you before you ruin a really nice sub.

 

You need to get rid o the cardboard and cut a wooden ring out of some wood for mounting. That cardboard will eventually compress and compromise the seal of the box.

Do you have a router or a jig saw?

 

I have a router and every freaking tools in the garage. It is one of those things that I just had to install late at night. Heading to Home depot to get a 1/8" wood.

 

Made the ring out of wood and painted . I took plastic backing of seat out. Now there is a plenty of room.

 

As per what ProForce said.... wouldn't it be easier to add a washer or some sort of spacer between the seat back and the bracket? I mean were only talking just a little bit here likely. A whole new bracket seems like a little excessive.

 

Any update on this, how is the sound quality tractng? I have three JL 10w3v3's on the way & supercrew triple sub box with extra depth on the way..... said screw it & pulled the trigger.
yes I know I could've gotten jl's slim 13''s ect.

 

Couple remedies I can offer, I also got the extra mounting depth box and just put 2 layers of fiber glass over each hole, problem solved, also the seat backs, of the back seats, have brackets that can be adjusted to get another half inch or so....

 

Sound quality is great. I ended pulling the back seat plastic piece off. Got plenty of clearance. I haven't inspect if there is movement with the box when braking. It looks like it fit snugly.

I am using a jl xd 500/3 amp. Still using the factory speakers. Probably going to buy focal 165 v30 for the front soon. Three subs?

I've managed to get 2" seat clearance for woofer excursion, even with 1/2" MDF spacer installed. There are even jl sub grilles on the way. Rear leg room & everything is going to function like OE. I mounted a Rockford T1000 under passenger side along with an Alpine mrp-300 for Memphis speakers under driver seat. Also, RAAMAT & Ensolite is everywhere in my taco. Cannot wait for the end result!

The JL's v3s came in today, couldn't resist putting one in. Decided to do a "mock up" using my old Dual 10'' Super Crew Sound box with some fiberglass strengthening I did.. Haven't heard back from SCS about the new triple 10'' box I ordered. Got a nice side picture of the speaker space gap between the seat. I did use spacers on the bottom seat brackets & the top "hook" brackets as well.
In short I did space the rear seats & seat bottoms about an entire 1". I have seen people fabricate/weld different top "hook" brackets in other threads, however I've had great success with minimal amount of hardware(12 longer bolts with about 150 3/8" washers. I plan on getting final measurments & posting them.
Honestly, the one JL w3v3 @ 500rms I did hookup sounds way more crisp & louder than the 2 kicker CVR104s @ 800rms in previously.

 

The Supercrewsound.com triple box came in unexpedly today. I have learned some interesting information!
If you take a look at the speaker terminal picture, you will see they would interfere with the box. Especially if the subwoofer wiring is plugged in from the outside to inside like normal. The best solution I found was to move the famous shiny (JL) emblem to the left 90degrees, you can barely see how I positioned the subwoofers in the box picture. I also removed the rubber magnet protector, but fitment didn't seem any different without them.
I then found a stack of cards to measure the distance from the back wall to the magnet. I measured just under 1/4" clearance with zero subwoofer spacers.
Doing the install tommorow. The box looks pretty solid & it should be finished then.

 

Well, the "setup" only lasted one song before the sub box met its limits...
The center subwoofer did hit the "6" extra depth wood"(probably from box flexing)squeezed the box open about 12" along the backside.
Contacted supercrewsound, they said they'll look at my box & send me a new one(I don't see the benefit of sending a duplicate box that would fail the same way?). Just going to stay positive and see if they have any ideas/solutions. If not I'll just reinforce the box & move on.

 

I had the same issue with the terminal. I just rotated the sub 180 degrees. Sorry to hear TacoMaw.

With their box, I had to put a spacer and then dremel the plastic pane of the taco in order to fit (the box was too wide).

 

Woke up bound & determined to get this Triple 10w3v3 setup to work today.
After ripping the beutiful carpet off, reinforcing the enclosure with drywall screws every 2" around the outer rim. Also, internally bracing the enclosure. Titebond III & 3/4" MDF Rings finished it off nice.
Yes, both rear seats are installed, just took a few quick pictures.
Airspace is really about .50sq ft at best instead of the advertised .65sq ft, not ideal. Despite the enclosure being a bit small, I am more than pleased with a tight, clean & superb sound!
Wasn't aiming for looks, my goal was to make my loudest & cleanest sounding project yet(in a fairly tight air space).


For the amount of creativity, time, & a shoot in the dark type approach, I wouldn't recommend the triple enclosure. Supercrewsound wasn't anywhere near as pleasant to talk to as Mr. Marv..
I am only sharing my personal experience in the 10w3v3 install..
Not meaning to bash or put anybody down. If you are truly wanting a quality plug and play quality enclosure, Mr. Marv is the man to talk too for your personal tacoma sound needs.
