Aftermarket tweeter stupid noob question

So about three years ago my wife bought me a set of Kenwood tweeters for chrismtas, after the passenger side one went out. She's starting to ask me when I'm going to put them in.

I'm fairly handy when it comes to electrical stuff, but the more I look at the different threads here on TW and research stuff, the more questions I have. I'm not looking to do a whole big system upgrade or anything. I have a Kenwood aftermarket HU that I already installed. I'm not big on car audio, so I don't know really anything about it. Nor do I really care to - I just want to replace the broken stuff and move on. I've seen stuff about crossovers, factory wiring sucking, and the infamous toyota 4-wire-to-2-wire adapter. Wiring wise, can I just splice the new tweeters in and be done with it?

 

Do the new ones have their own crossovers?

 

This is everything that came with the speakers. I shouldn't need a crossover just to swap them out, right?

It's impossible to tell from the picture or the information given whether he needs a crossover or not. They might have high pass filters on them.

We'll need to know the model of the tweeters to look them up and see, or, if there are only +/- posts and/or a wire pigtail on the back of them and nothing else pre-wired to the input terminals.

 

If you do need a crossover, the good news is they are cheap.

I didn't wire my Toyota but my old Chevy truck had just 6.5 door speakers which I replaced with a component setup. The crossovers are just passive ones that you can buy cheap..I might even have a set kicking around if you are interested for short money

 

I'm actually en route to pigeon forge for the week, I'll post back with the model numbers as soon as I get home. FWIW, I know they came with a few different options for hooking them up - straight wire, a 2pin connector, and then a slide in. I forget the actual name.

 

Nice..have a fun and safe trip. My hunch is you'll need a crossover but not having used Kenwood speakers before I don't want to steer you wrong for sure.

Be aware that you'll be pulling your hair out without a full understanding of how Toyota clusterfucked the stock speaker wiring.

Unplugging the stock tweeters will kill power to the main cones.
There are 4 wires on the connector... they are spliced in parallel at the tweeter.
You'll need to replicate this in order to get all 4 speakers working:

 

If you just cut (and insulate) the two going to the tweeeter, and use an external crossover for the new Woofer/Tweeter, that works, too.

 

Yeah, I'd researched enough to figure out the two pairs are connected. My question is if I splice them in after it merges to justthe +/-. I think I'm going to go ahead and get the crossover just to make it easier on me. Any suggestions so far as brands?

 

Ya, I cut the tweeter off and spliced/sealed the wires so I didn't screw with the stock harness.
Put an adapter on the factory "woofer" connector and ran that to the x-over.

I mounted the x-over to the steel just under the armrest on the "dry" side. 10 seconds to pop the panel out enough to reach the 3db -/+ switch if I feel the need to tweak it.

 

I have a pair new in box..Alphasonik I think is the name. Short version is I bought them for my old truck and it turned out the crossover I thought broke was good, I shortly after bought the Tacoma and used 6x9's.
