    All,

Looking to do a speaker only upgrade on my 2013 non nav system (DoubleCab)

Does anyone have a list of specs for the Head Unit?

What type of speaker combinations are possible and useful from an upgrade perspective assuming I want to keep the stock HU. In other words, how do I get the most out of it?

I did this for a while with Alpine speakers and a Alpine amp. But the deck was not quite enough for me and end up going with a Pioneer Double Din
AVH-4400BT deck. My truck is an 2008 double cab. I had this setup for about 6 months then went with the pioneer head unit.
Just a way better setup but if your trying to save money it will be better than stock for sure until you could afford the newer deck.

Crutchfield would be a good place to start to find out about the components, although usually buying a new HU will yield better results.

What he said ^ You'll get better sound from just replacing the stock HU, rather than just replacing the speakers. I'm currently running stock speakers with a Sony XAV-601BT head unit and the sound is waaaaay better than what it was with the stock head unit.

But if you really want to buy speakers, a lot of guys will replace the front doors with 6.5" component speakers and for the back doors they'll use either 6.5" woofers or 6.5" coaxials.

Crutchfield is a great place for speakers and Decks. That is where I got all of my stuff and they are very knowledgeable of what is best for you and they have great prices. So dito on what this guy said.

Thanks for the Crutchfield recs. I actually like the stock 2013 HU from a usability perspective, and replacing it with a similar touch display with all the integrated phone/bluetooth seems like it would be more work and money than its worth.

So, that's why I want to keep stock HU.

As for the speakers, would the stock HU support component speakers in the front (separate door/tweeter units) and a more base intensive speaker in the back door? I'm not an audio guy, so just trying to figure out if there are certain types of speakers that the stock HU would not support.

As for benefit of putting in better speakers ... would I be able to get 2x sound quality, 4x, 10% better, .... trying to figure all this out from a cost/rewards perspective.

    Thanks for the help guys!

I'm not sure how much of a benefit you'd get from replacing the speakers since I didn't do that. Taco084gb might have some insight into that since he did. But a lot of people that replace the speakers in any car end up replacing the head unit too. They do that either because they want more functionality out of the head unit, or because the speaker upgrade didn't upgrade the sound enough.

You can run any type of speaker (coaxial, components, or plain woofers) in any door with the stock head unit. The only limitations you have are the size of the openings on the doors and no holes in the back doors for separate tweeters. I haven't seen the inside of the 2013s, but I know in previous years the Tacomas had component speakers in the front doors and woofers in the rear doors. If this is what you have in your truck, I'd recommend keeping that setup (components up front, woofers in the back). Unless you have people in the back seat frequently, then I'd do coaxials in the back.

I kept my stock head unit as well since I enjoy the factory look.

    I installed this...

    Using this...

Turned out nicely. Only drawback is the slight hum at low volumes. But that is the price I pay not using aftermarket HU for a cleaner source.

Anyone tried the Alpine powerpack KTP-445u (150 at BB, 100 on ebay/used) to power the speakers and added a kicker hideaway, 11HS8 (connected directly to the HU)? This seems like a good option to give me the missing bass sounds and drive the factory speakers with more power which they are currently missing, while keeping the factory display setup.

Any GOOD Quality alternatives to that Kicker Hideaway sub? A bit pricey.

Wondering about the setup and outcome - can you do it plug and play on the powerpack, how much does it help, and Would that be too much power for the factory speakers? Does the base HU have a place to connect a sub like the Kicker?

btw the stock speakers have a magnet the diameter of a quarter- its so small!

but i chose to switch out to jbl oem speakers and they fit exact, plug right in, and sound really good- with these (but any heavier speaker) the door now sounds more like a lexus when closing, not so much tin canny

btw i have a thread on these speakers for sale as i purchased more than i needed - i have 2 sets avail for sale

    good luck in your quest
