I have a double din Pioneer head unit and it has an option for a rearview camera for when you drive in reverse but i don't have one installed. How tough is it to install the camera and wire it to the head unit?

It's pretty easy, just time consuming- I did it without burning my truck to the ground.

Order the Pioneer camera; I used the less expensive of the two (I think it was around $150 or so) since all of the reviews I read said the more expensive camera wasn't worth the cost difference. You also need to order a way to mount it; I used the Pop & Lock tailgate lock for the later Tacomas. The latch/lock mounts without any issues but you'll need to grind a bit of the top of the camera opening so that the camera points more out instead of more down (hopefully that makes sense).

The cable for the camera is much longer than you'll need. I ran it out through the bottom of the tailgate (since I don't ever remove my tailgate), zip tied it to the wiring harness and up through one of the other wiring grommets under the truck then under the carpet and up behind the glove box. Plug the camera into the small control box (?) that comes with the camera. The control box thing plugs into the head unit and you can mount the little box on the tab Toyota conveniently provided to the left behind the glove box for the factory reverse camera (which wasn't an option- just like the cabin air filter wasn't even though the parts are there). Attach the wire for the reverse sensor then go into your head unit settings and enable the camera.

I bought a $20.00 dollar one from Amazon with mount, works fine.
