Why not get an iPad and one of those flexible arm holders?

    Advantages:
You can change software as new apps come out.
You can use the iPad for other things

In a few years, you can upgrade your iPad - once you install a nav system you are pretty well stuck with it. Stuff changes really fast. I bought my Taco in '07, if I had put a nav in it I would have a 6 year old nav system, which would be really old news considering how fast things move in that field.

    This.

The advantage is that it's always there and available, no issues with mounting (California has gotten FUCKED on GPS mounting laws).

Disadvantage is you're stuck for $1000 when you want to upgrade the hardware, and upgrading the maps and firmware means either dragging the notebook out to the truck, or loading from USB and hoping it doesn't break connection.

The advantage of the on-dash is they are cheap... <$250 for a nice Garmin, you can take them inside and plug into the desktop for map and firmware upgrades, and you aren't "stuck" if something nicer hits the market.

Drawback to the separate unit is mounting, and theft concerns.. you need to stash the unit somewhere when parked. Head units aren't hard to steal, but they are harder than opening a console or glove box and snagging a GPS.

I think the only question that needs to be asked is do you need it? If you answered yes, than you probably need a navigation system.

Satoshi'd grill. blacked out badges. aftermarket sound system. De-chromed and color matched. OME 885s + Dakars with 3rd leaf removed. LR UCAs. Scs stealth 6 with 285 duratracs. BAMF sliders
I voted yes because i love mine, BUT most in dash navs do not come with the best navigation software, google maps does a better job most of them time. If you are also planning on upragading your soundsystem then i think it is worth it. If you only want to do the upgrade for navigation and dont really care about all the added benefits of a nice aftermarket headunit then it is probably not worth it.

Get a nuvi with lifetime maps and hardwire it. I had a Nav in my civic and it was terrible. It never took me the right way and always the long way. Plus map updates were $100. The Garmin has been amazing. Mine actually knows when traffic is approaching and suggests a better route. And Map updates are free. Oh and it was $100.

Kenwood runs Garmin software and maps, but some functions are different... no custom vehicles, I'm not sure about custom POIs.

The Nav-Traffic still sucks and there's no way to enable the colors on the map reflecting speeds without having an annoying "Traffic Ahead" voice interrupting the REAL traffic report every 5 minutes in LA.
I hated to disable it, because it is remarkably close in it's estimate of travel time on a route... I'm talking it's within 5 minutes arrival on a 45 mile commute... but she's just so annoying and won't shut up, and "her" volume is not tied to the radio's volume, so I can't simply turn her down without navigating the setup menus... and she can't be muted, so even if her volume is all the way down, your radio/MP3/CD is interrupted with the low-volume "Traffic Ahead"

But my wife's dash-mount unit does the same thing.

My truck has factory GPS and its such a pain in the ass to use I just end up using my iPhone anyways. Much easier to Google and click the address then to type it up and then have the unit say it cant find the address.
