Factory Tacoma fake stereo face

I live in an area that's known for the tweekers. And when they're tweek'n, they'll steal anything that isn't tied down, and even some things that are. Plus, I just wanted to see if I could do it. You might be thinking "just remove the face". Yeah, no, thats not enough in my book.

I wanted a stereo with bluetooth, and already had a unit with a missing face. I acquired a face off ebay to save a few bucks. Also I was already familiar with how this stereo is setup. One of the keys to this mod was steering wheel controls so I don't necessarily have to take off the fake face all the time. A pain to install but worth it. Actually what I like most is I can see the aftermarket screen through the stock screen. I had to mod the brackets a bit, but wasn't too hard. If I get enough interests, I'll show you the brackets. Enjoy.

Thanks, will have a few things to wrap up like getting the bottom panel to line up better, and maybe some magnetic strips underneath to hold the face in a little more. Right now it's just sitting there and I haven't driven with it yet.

+1. I'd like to see the brackets and more. How did you separate the stock face from the head unit? Wonder if this can be done w a double din.

 

All I did was mount a thin plate to the original brackets, then made new holes in the thin plate to locate the stereo. BTW, old license plates work really well ;-)

Double DIN? Hm...maybe.

Separating the face from the stock stereo: A few screws on the side and some tabs. There will be a circuit board still attached to the face. You'll need to remove the screws that mount it. I used a hot glue gun on the back side to keep all the stock face parts in place. Sorry, no pics.

 

Now get a couple of bins to put top and bottom of radio. You'll be able to hide all kinds do stuff.
