    Hi all,
I'm getting ready to replace the factory stereo in my 04 TRD O/R Extended cab but the shop that I plan on using to do the work is running into a problem in planning things out. I want to replace the existing large factory stereo with a single DIN radio, and below it, I plan to mount a Bearcat 996 scanner, which is also one DIN unit. The problem is, the Metra dash kit isn't exactly t two DIN units high, but rather about 1.8 or so.

Can anyone suggest a viable solution for this problem? I really don't want to be without an audio system in the car, and I need the scanner in there for sure (plus a 2-way that will be remote-headed as well). Is there enough room in the dash for what I plan to do, and can it be accomplished without destroying the plastic dash bezel?

    Thanks in advance.

Is there even room for the 2 items to fit in the dash? If so, you would have to go customer fabrication. That will be more costly.

Well this is what I'm trying to figure out. Money isn't an object, within reason--a few hours' labour for a perfect install is money well spent IMHO. But rather it's a question of can it even be done. The local shop is ultra high-end (they have an exclusive contract with 2 Mercedes dealerships and the Rolls Royce and Bentley dealerships nearby) but their experience is in top-shelf mobile audio systems, not 2-ways and scanners.

Use the factory brackets. You don't need a dash kit to put 2 single din units in a double din opening.

The question, though....is it a true double din opening? The installers say no, that it's about 3/4" too small top-to-bottom. I don't have enough experience to agree with them or if they're just trying to rip me off or what.

Your installer isn't too bright. It IS a double din opening. As I type this, I am looking at a 96 Taco in my shop. If you ISO mount both units, you should be fine. If you have to use the trim rings on both of them, then you will have issues.
