I am wondering if you can use an iPhone without service. I mainly want the GPS functionality so it can interface with my Pioneer in advanced app mode for on screen GPS. I can create a mobile hotspot with my Android for Wi-Fi data to the iPhone. A buddy said he thought the service provider (I.e. AT&T) could disable the functionality but could not cite a source.

If so I'll pick up a used one and just not activate it. I don't like IOS enough to use an iPhone as my cell. I love my S4.

The map app works on my iPhone 5 in airplane mode with the wifi turned on. So what you want to do seems like it would work. I just don't know if having or not having a SIM card would make any difference.

Without service, the GPS on the iPhone will be able to locate you in the map app. But since you won't have service it won't be able to load any maps. So you'll just be a blue dot on a blank screen. Since I just got it to work in airplane mode using wifi, I'm thinking it should work.

You should use someone's iPhone to test it out. Just take out their SIM card, turn the wifi on, and plug it in to your Pioneer.

I can't say with 100% certainty if the GPS will work but I do know you can call 911 on a non activated cell. With that there has to be some functionality on the phone.

Hey OP, this guy actually has a good point. iPads and iPods have wifi. And on wifi, the maps app will work. I think you should borrow one of these devices from someone for a little test. Use your phone as a hot spot and try to use the maps app on the iPod or iPad. In theory, this should work.

I'll give it a shot and post back...it may be a while before I can test. Gotta run the cables and pick up the Pioneer cable. Both my kids have iPod touches so I can test on one of theirs.
