Like Nammer, I too am thinking about upgrading my '06 wheel to a '12. I have the RH controls and an after market HU that I installed last year, so will be updating the connections so that the SWCs are functional. Any one come across a steering wheel upgrade yet??

Why use a 2012 when you can swap in the latest? It required running a couple of new wires, but I replaced my 2007 wheel with a 2014.

Thanks bradforj! Will have to look into this further. I have a line on a used 2012 wheel but if I can locate a newer one I'll go that route. Keep us posted on your wiring / illumination issue....

Another excellent mod for this feature!

    Thanks locomotive282 posting the following:

"I want to thank the OP for showing us this great mod. Very easy and inexpensive if you already have left side controls on your truck. Hope this can help everybody else looking to do this mod themselves."

@adio After you loosen the torx bits on the side, does the cover come right off? Mine kinda still feels hung up on something. Figured Id ask before I yank it off and break a tab or something.

Hello all, super great thread. I have a 04 4Runner sr5 4wd standard steering wheel no controllers. Was wondering if this mod can be done on my vehicle? I'm planning on installing an android car stereo and comes equipped with BT, steering control and wifi. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Really wanted to thank the OP for the write up. I didn't do a Bluetooth install, but I went from a basic steering wheel to one with left side audio controls. Scored the steering wheel/airbag, and clock spring from a local wrecking yard for $90!!
If you're somewhere close to a B&R auto, give them a shot. Awesome deals to be had if you're willing to pull your own parts!

Anyone ever end up swapping in a 2012+ steering wheel in a pre-2011? My radio is a 2013 but I have a 2008, and A. I wanna make my steering wheel controls work again, and B. the pre-2011 steering wheels are ugly. My current wheel already has the audio controls. What all would I need to get??

Awesome write up! I'm attempting this myself. I've got an 09 and my donor, parts from an 07. When I took out the clock spring I noticed that it was different then the 07 one. It has this grey clip that is added onto it. Does anyone know what it belongs to?

Is there a way to swap the airbag cover without swapping the entire airbag assembly? I’m trying not to spend $330 on a complete new airbag if not needed.

If not, could the current cover be trimmed to fit the button modules?
