JL HD-RLC (Remote Level Control)?

I just finished installing my new system:

Kenwood DNX9980HD
JL XD700/5
JL C5 speakers all around

With the HD-RLC installed I was hoping to be able to adjust the sub level but it does absolutely nothing. I guess it could be defective...

Has anyone had a similar failure?

 

Never used one of these, but I'd start with checking the continuity of your cable. Do you have a meter with an Ohm measurement setting?

Based on the info provided in the thread linked below, it appears the RLC is not just a potentiometer, but rather a digital level controller. Which means it will be nearly impossible for a hobbyist to troubleshoot without circuit schematics.

Note: Manville Smith (msmith) works for JL Audio and is a very reliable source for anything JL related.

Remote Level Control for Select JL Audio Amplifiers

The HD-RLC remotely controls the Bass Level of the following JL Audio amplifiers:
HD-Series: All models
XD-Series: All models
MHD-Series: All models
M-Series: M600/1, M200/2, M500/3, M400/4, M700/5, M600/6
When the HD-RLC is connected to the above amplifiers, it acts as an attenuator on the input gain of the amplifier and is used to adjust the overall level of the amplifier from the front of the vehicle.
The HD-RLC kit includes the rotary control with a black ABS knob, mounting hardware and one 18 ft. (5.5 m) cable.
A satin-finish aluminum knob can be purchased separately.

From JL's website. I have one too and heard it was not a bass boost knob or anything but gave you a remote knob to add/subtract amp gain without always messing with it.

I'd like to find out more on this too. I have a 900/5 HD amp to hook up with this

 

I just went out to the truck with a long piece of phone cord (same thing JL uses) and bypassed the one that came from JL. The level control works just fine. I guess it is just a defective cable...

Yea, it's not a bass boost knob...just a gain knob. I recall reading somewhere that on the XD700/5, you can configure it to control the gain of all channels or just the sub channel.

 

The XD700/5 has a switch right above the HD-RLC connection that allows for controlling all speakers or just the sub channel.
