The shop I'm considering to do my install would only replace the front door speakers. With a LOC and amp, what prevents the cheap, stock rear speakers from being damaged at higher volumes?

    Thanks for the help.

I'm no expert, but i just looked at my rear speakers yesterday and they are paper thin and almost nothing to it. I could only imagine these would get damaged if ran from the amp. However, if the LOC is only used for the front channel and they leave the rear speakers running off the stock head unit, they should be fine. I wouldn't see why you couldn't convert the front channel only using the LOC and leave the rear alone. Only thing i could see possibly happening is having the 2 channels being out of sink since one will be running through an amp. I am in the process of using a LOC to run all speakers, so I have technically never used one. But i wouldn't see why that wouldn't work.

    Remove them. Or upgrade.

Your back speakers are probly powered by the stock head unit like Aaron said..you don't really need to run new speakers on the back.unless you ride in the back ,but most the time you'll never really hear them..you want your music to feel & sound like it's comin from the front.

No, that is not the way to go. You want to balance your speakers so you can't tell where the sound is coming from, like a surround sound. If you can tell where the sound is coming from, your speakers are not balanced correctly.

What you are referring to is called sound staging.

For proper sound staging you do not run rear speakers. It throws off the sound staging effect.

Having rear speakers is for the people in the rear. Since they are on the floor almost they are pretty useless.

Also the point of surround sound is to tell where the sound is coming from. Not to blend it all together. With a 5.1 channel home theater if someone talks behind the main character the sound should sound like its coming from the back. That's the point of surround speakers.

    Car audio is different.

You are correct about the sound staging and 5.1 home theatre. I don't think music is typically recoreded as 5.1, so you aren't going to hear true staging/imaging.

I only run a true 2 channel (Vandersteens) through a tube power amp (Audio Research) at home and have them set up so imaging is present in audio.

They do make 5.1 music CD's but almost all music is recorded in 44.1kHz in 2 channels.

Yup, that is why, imo, car speakers should be balanced, not just the front speakers. There is really just left and right channel, so distibuting the left between front and back (same with right channel) sounds the best for me.

Plus, if you only use the front speakers on our trucks, the sub turns off.

    Yea.

On my truck ('11), with stock system, which is supposedly 'premium' jbl haha, if I turn the fader all the way to the front, the sub and rear speakers turn off.

Ok. Yeah that makes sense since you are fading the sound up front. If you physically remove the rear speakers the sub will still work.
