Okay, I know this may seem like a weird idea, but I want to know what you guys think. I was playing around with the idea of mounting some sort of night vision device on my vehicle with a monitor inside. I couldn't really find any products like this in my price range. Has anyone ever tried mounting night vision security cameras on a roof rack? I was thinking about maybe a dome type camera that I could even control. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

It was just a fun project I wanted to play around with. I was looking at different dome cameras. I would mount them on the hood or roof and somehow look up a joy stick to control camera and some sort of monitor.

Here's something better than just Nightvision. And you can control it with a joystick, but expensive. There's a video of a guy who makes his own Thermal imagining setup on youtube, using I believe a thermal camera from a Cadillac, but it's been a while sense I've seen it.

She doesn't want to date you, and nothing you can do in secret will help this!

J/K, hope you find what you are looking for. In night vision.

Lol. Nice. I'm currently on the hunt for my first Tacoma and was trying to get this system figured out ahead of time. I've seen FLIR but it's kind of expensive. A halfway decent night vision security camera can be found for under $100. Between that and the computer parts I already have I'm hoping to get her done for under $250. I'll be sure to post directions if it works. Any more input or ideas would be great guys!

I was thinking something like this. Of course it would be mounted on its side with the base on the roof rack.

OP is that camera you posted controllable?
I've been wanting to do something like this for a while, that'll be good if you find a good cheap way.

Yes it is. But I'm still looking for something smaller and maybe cheaper. I was also looking into ways to ad infrared lights that can be independently activated when needed. As far as viewing, there are a wide range of small monitors.

The problem with night vision cameras are that they rely on darkness, and the special infrared LEDs in the camera the emit the IR light for the camera. Headlights and reverse lights will basically blind the nightvision part, and turn it into just any other grill or roof mounted camera. That is the the FLIR system is so much better, but yes, very expensive.

Yeah, FLIR would be awesome but out of my price range... for now. Like I said, just messing around with a fun project. Thanks for the input.

    Here is an idea:

You can buy several really cheap black/white security cameras from some place like Harbor Freight. Set them up in an array. For example, you could have 3 facing the front and 1 facing each side. Then have monitors in the cab that correspond to each camera. This might even allow you to drive in complete darkness as long as you have a good infrared light source. The only drawback is that your cameras might get "blinded" by strong light sources beaming right at them.
