I recently visited Car Toys near Willowbrook mall to pick out new speakers and a sub for my 2013 Toyota Tacoma. They told me in order for them to install 6x9 speakers in my doors they would have to build some sort of box to put them in...is this necessary? They handed me a list of everything I needed, including labor and $800 on that list was just for labor. I'm a younger female, not very experienced in this area at all, so I would like to know if I am being scammed. I also don't want to spend as much as they said if it's not necessary. Please help!

Please try not to use too many technical terms (haha) for I most likely will not understand.
    -thanks so much!

Yup, Sorry to tell you but RUN Tabitha.

We can definitely assist you here, And if you have any skills at all, if your only doing door speakers we can easily assist you and there are tons of links online for vids etc to guide you through the process.

For a sub box, which you will need one, There are lots online to purchase. Im not huge on prefab box;s but there are some that are decent.

Sounds like they're trying to rip you off .I never heard of a box for the speakers in a door.I don't know what size speakers they are that you have.the most you would have to do is cut some spacers to fit those in place if they already have 6 by 9's that are deeper.

$800 to install a sub/door speakers and amp? Tell them to sit on it and rotate. They are trying to screw you.

You do not need a box for the 6x9's, you may need an adapter to fit the speakers to the doors.

This is what I would do if I were you. On TW there are regional threads, I'd look for the thread closest to your location and ask someone to do the install for you locally on the side, or help you do it if you want to learn. There are always people on here that can help. If you need some assistance send me a PM and I'll help you out with getting that moving.

I do stereo installs all the time in Az for people, I'd charge no more than $200 to install speakers/sub/amp. That's a side job so any shop will be more, but $800 for door speakers, sub, and amp is a rip off.

Can you post the list they gave you? I'd love to see how much they are charging you for each item.

Also, as much as I hate to say this, if you go to a shop take a guy with you. Salesmen will run you through the works as soon as they know you don't know jack shit about stereo's. It's shitty, but it does help.

if you would like to do this your self/have someone do it for you i would recommend

speaker rings/subwoofer box from MR.Marv just private message him what speakers you have/want and he will sell you the right ring
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/member.php?u=1009

Crutchfield for speakers, they will include the wiring harness for stock to Speaker
    subwoofer of your choice
amp-monoblock watts depending on what sub you want
wiring kit for amp (wire gauge depending on what amp you buy)

also you do have an aftermarket radio right?

Like everyone else has stated, total ripoff. I would have to go back by there, after my new install and let them know the difference in pricing and steer any others away from these guys.

CAR TOYS :( Those guys are assholes and thieves. If I were going to have someone do it, I'd check out the local car clubs for recommendations. I put a Clarion NX404 Media Center with a small Alpine bridged amp in my '09 with Polk 6X9 3 way door speakers, parking brake by-pass and steering control adapter. I wasn't in a big hurry so I did a lot of research (Google and this board) it sounds fantastic, looks factory.

If you live near DFW I'd use Sound Works on McCart Avenue, If you buy your stuff online he'll even put it in. Oscar is the BOMB !!

Good info, but stay away from this company. Worst customer service you can get.

Okay...that's what I thought. They told me my final total was $2300 (after the gave me a "discount") after I picked out a small sub, amp, and four speakers. At the time, I didn't argue, because as I said before, I have absolutely NO experience in this area...but I did feel like it was quite a bit of money. My ex had just done the same thing but in his ram and it was no where near that much.

    Do you have any preferences,
What type of music do you listen to?
What do you expect out of the system ?

Id venture to say that aside from install you should be able to come in under $1000 with relative ease and still get what you need. Then budget $200 or so for an install

    H.O.L.Y.S.H.I.T.!!!!!

I would go back and tell them to eat a giant bowl of sloppy dicks.

For $2300 I can build you a stereo system that would blow your fucking mind.

Glad to see you posted in the Houston BS thread. They'll help you out. TW is good at helping out other TW members.

Please, pretty please, post the quote the gave you. I want to know what they are putting in your truck and how much they are charging.
