I'm confused. I thought you answered my "what's your budget" question with "$50 to $100."

What's your budget for everything? Head unit, amp, speakers, etc...

Alpine head unit. Polk speakers. Crutchfield is a good place to start looking to see what fits.

There was one for the 1st Gens?

Haha dude a DAC does not up convert anything. A cd is at 16 bit depth 44.1khz sample rate. A dac simply takes digital audio signal and converts it back into analog.

    No up sampling is happening.

All that happens is the the digital information is read off the cd and converted into analog signal for the speakers to reproduce the original signal that was encoded onto the cd.

This also happens if you head unit is reading off a ss card, USB drive or directly off the phone via USB or blue tooth.

Besides that very big and totally wrong nugget of info. I agree the pioneer head unit are the best sounding due to their nyquist filter in the DAC and overal features.

OP: for 200 bucks you can get so,e decent speakers, but even with a nice headunit they won't sound great unless you use a real amplifier to power then. Head units are only rates around 20w RMS output which is very small to power speakers, especially nice speakers. And definitely not enough to compete with a sub if you have one.

If you have a sub, get an amp for the speakers too. And a nice headunit.

    Then you'll be set..possibly.

Depends on the architecture of the DAC. Not many stick to Sony/Philips Redbook anymore. Here's an interesting read:

Yes UP is the wrong word. A DAC takes binary numbers and converts them into analog sounds.

Up sampling is totally possible and does happen. I do it for audio stuff all the time when mixing.

The DAC in your truck does not and never will.

    Yes

200 overal budget isn't going to get you anything good. A decent head unit will eat up most of the 200

If you're near a good picknpull you can usually find decent speakers for cheap. I've picked up many pairs of JBL, Kicker, Alpine speakers for about $20 a pair, amps and all the wiring you could need too. Even found a set of Focal tweeters for $10 and they are not cheap.

Don't pay much attention to their reviews... there's many people here that you'd be better off getting info from. Personally I got mine from Mr. Marv.

I would take some time to save up some more cash, and use the time while you are saving to do some more research. I'm well over $1,000 into my system with all labor done myself, and I'm still not 100% satisfied with it yet. That doesn't mean you are going to spend that much, but you'll wish you put a bit more than $200 into a head unit, speakers and amp. Even at used prices.

I'm partial to Pioneer for head units, Polk/Rockford/ID CTX for speakers, JL/Alpine/Pioneer for amp, JL for sub.

On sale, and the numbers look pretty good overall. Never ran or installed JBL, but have heard good things.

Grab 2 sets and make them fit. There, I saved you $50ish of your $200 total to spend. The last $50 for gas.

A good Pioneer head will run you about the same($200) next month,,hopefully on sale.

That amp won't power all your speakers and the sub. It's only for the sub.

Should the op save some money by only going with some nice front door speakers and just unplugging the rear door speakers?

Do the rear speakers on a DC really matter from the driver seat’s perspective?

Does powering 2 speakers instead of 4 speakers mean more power going to the 2 speakers?

No. Rear speakers help fill out the low mids.

    Sure do

Not really. That's where gain staging comes in. But when you set the balance control you sorta of pick which gets more signal set to them so in a way yes. But the amp should be set up in a way that the right amount of power is going to the speakers when needed.

I have used SSL amps. They are nice for the price. Never the headunits though.

Thanks. I go to lots of meets. Aren't any Offroad parks by me but no need for them either.

This was my last adventure: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/trip-reports/348932-sos-report-full-story.html

Click my signature and scrolling down a bit will show a section of other meets I have gone too.
