I just installed the Pioneer NEX-4000.
I absolutely love it!
They have the high end NEX-8000 model that has built in NAVI if you wish to have it.

You could always go this route...

Opens up a lot of doors for add-ons and options that you could never have with a normal head unit. Not much more expensive, either. Check the link in my sig for more info.

I think I am going with the nex4000. I am going to make the purchase at the end of this month. Now should I install it myself or have someone install it for me. Anything I should know before installing the stereo. Any advice from you guys.

Now. Any recommendation on where to buy it. Is it ideal to get a backup camera.

I have the Pioneer 4000 NEX installed in my Tacoma and I love it. My recommendation would be to ensure you purchase any harness adapters necessary to allow the HU to work with any existing steering wheel / USB controls you may have and want to retain. I'm not familiar with the setup of the entertainment system for a 2006 Tacoma so I'm just saying to know what you need before you install, only because it would suck to have to take it out again.

Things I love about the 4000 NEX:
- CD / DVD playback capability (the kids love the movies)
- Apple CarPlay
- Updatable firmware via USB
- detachable face
- EQ options are INSANE. You can tune this thing to your tastes all day long
- Physical volume up/down buttons. This is more personal preference, but I find a tactile button still satisfying for some reason.

Things I do NOT love about the 4000 NEX:
- Waze on iOS 8 is currently not supported - hoping this is addressed in a firmware update soon. (Not a real big though, since I just use my phone display for Waze anyway)
- phone call volume leaves something to be desired. I'm still tuning, but this is something my OEM entune HU seemed to excel at.
- requires an adapter for the OEM backup camera (due to differences in Tacoma equipment being 12v and Pioneer equipment being 8 volt). I ran into this with my 2015 Tacoma, so this may not even apply.

I also had mine installed at the shop where I purchased my system, only because there were a lot of variables in play and the shop offered a lifetime warranty on all work done, so I'm covered in case anything ever goes wrong.

Anyway - my two cents.

I bought ALL my system components through a place called Phantom Electronics in Thousand Oaks. Great experience and warranty can't be beat. Howard, the owner, is super nice and doesn't push a sale.

+1 for Phantom Electronics!

I deal with Howard all the time. We used to help each other out a lot between his and my old stereo shop and we still do business all the time.

Nice to see another TW member in the area.

Shane - I was just reading all about your custom harnesses you print out and then noticed you were in TO! Definitely nice to run in to someone local on this forum!

I may go to him if you pm me his shop address. Also it looks like the nex4000 got updated to the 4100nex. I did pass by a shop not far from my house and I felt a bad vibe in his store. Anyways i have the stock stereo without the steering wheel control. I was thinking of getting a Bluetooth version. Also what should be the price I have to pay for the stereo. Now I guess I will be getting the 4100nex. Also is it worth getting the backup camera.

Backup camera, in my humble opinion, is totally worth it. I never had one before my 2015 Tacoma and now I don't know what I did without it. With regards to the 4100 NEX in price, I'm not sure. I paid $700 at Phantom Electronics for my 4000 NEX. You can find it cheaper on Amazon and eBay, but keep in mind the lifetime warranty you get when you buy it from a reputable shop and have them install it. Can't get that from Amazon.

I'll PM you the address to the shop.

I have one of the NEX HUs also. I agree with the others that it is a great HU. I've run into 2 issues though that have not been mentioned:

1) BT audio (music) from a device only works if there are no USB devices hooked up. If USB device is connected, no BT audio. More of a PITA, but depends on if you use a USB device in addition to BT. It is a known issue/feature, unclear on if it will get "fixed" or not.
2) The HU has been known to lockup. When it does, only way to get it to reset is to turn the truck off and restart it. I've had this happen a few times, but each time was on a road trip with multiple USB devices attached at the same time. I have not had a lockup with only my phone attached.
3) One more thing, I've had an issue when using Apple Maps through an iPhone displaying on the NEX. If the iPhone is disconnected from the HU USB while using maps, when connected back up, the HU display displays a portrait mode map, not landscape.

NEX8100 is coming out soon so im sure you could get a NEX8000 for a slight discount soon.

I really like the Kenwood DNX/DNN (forgot which) 992, we just got one installed at work, its rather nice. I am also partial to kenwood as i find it more simplistic as far as navigating through the menus, and i like the Garmin GPS

The reason I like the NEX4000 (4100) is that the face is detouchable. Now I am just waiting for the fund so I can get the stereo, backup camera and get a professional install. I can mess with computer but not with my car stereo. I always stay away from the installation part.
