Is this a good buy?

I would like a cb radio for my truck but I don't want it to be visible all the time like a normal cb radio. I was thinking about going the handheld route.

If I understand this right I have the handheld radio in the truck and a cord runs from the radio to the antenna on the roof and when I'm not using it I can take the antenna off and just carry the radio alone? Is this a good setup or should I do something different?

never seen that before but what it is is a hand held that you plug into you cig lighter and run the antenna outside for use and when in not just unplug it and put it away

 

You think it will have good range. 20 miles or so?

 

Nevermind it says only .5 to 4 miles. Is that normal or not a lot?

 

We are on the same page, this is what I am looking at. Jolayiv and Silverback07, have this setup.

 

How did they install this?

 

I am waiting on a return pm from them. I assume they just ran a power and ground to the outlet. The second wire is the coax from the antenna. Run that where ever you choose.

What I like about the corba is it comes with a magnetic antenna so I can just pull the antenna off, unplug the radio and hide the whole setup when I'm not using it.

 

Alot of people don't like the magnet, I'm not certain why. I have a 3 way mirror mount I am going to mount to the bed rails and have the coax ran permanently. I'll just remove the antenna when I want it hidden.

I know the magnets come with a felt on the bottom so I don't see them scratcing, I belive it is a pretty strong magnet so I don't see it moving. Only thing I can think is the fact that it is soo damn high, and would hit everything. I like this

In the picture the antenna is smaller than the radio. How long is the antenna?

 

Sorry I was outside making a mount. Which antenna are you speaking of? There is an antenna that comes with the handheld, but most of us are using an external antenna such as the firestick or firefly. If you go external you shouldn't need the supplied one.

 

I use that Cobra 38. It works well. I dont use that antenna. I have a 3 ft firestick.

If you want to use this radio, you almost have to use an external antenna. With the antenna on the radio inside the cab, I can only get about 1/4 mile range. With the external antenna I can get several miles.

 

I just ordered that Midland hand-held from Amazon yesterday. It shipped today, but the adaptor for the external antenae is on backorder. I did the ashtray mod on my Taco, the hand-held is for the FJ.

 

Ordered mine up a couple of hours ago.
