2005+ Backseat Sub Box Capacity

Has anyone figured out what the biggest sub box (capacity-wise) you can squeeze behind the back seats in a double cab is?

I want to start looking for subs, but I need to know what my max capacity is so I can get a sub that I'll be able to tune the box for and not be limited by size.

 

u want to make one box all the way across? just measure it up, seperate into sqaures and triangles and do the math
i have designed a box to have the JL 13TW5 fit with .8 Cubic Ft of airspace, no money currently

 

Measuring would be the easy solution, but I'm in Iraq for a while Unfortunately I can't quite reach to accomplish the task myself.

I was just thinking behind each seat. If I feel the need for two subs I'll build two identical boxes.

 

well since the seats are 60/40... my box is very close to the center coming from the 40 side
u might be able to squeeze out two 1 cubic foot boxes, it might be tight though and depth is an issue, the JL is only 2.5 inches deep which is all my setup will fit

 

I've gotta check out what subs I'm after. I was going to put some JL 10w6v2's in my car, but I haven't even looked at them recently enough to recall the mounting depth. I'll bet it's beyond 2.5" though. Maybe I could milk some depth if I glass it instead of building with wood?

 

You should be able to get just over 2 cuft, if it is all used. However, you won't have any where convenient for amps and the like. Another note, your mounting depth is much more likely the limiting factor, rather than total airspace.

 

JL makes a stealthbox to mount behind the back passenger seat that holds two 10w1v2-8's, which have a mounting depth of 4.34"...That gives me some ground to run on. Sooner (a sooner from TX? sounds dangerous..) you say just over 2 cuft, are you talking about a single box spanning the whole width, or breaking the boxes up? I'm assuming the former, but just hoping for some clarification.

As for the box; yes, I was refering to one single span of a box. You can get a little over 2 cuft out of it. That is the most airspace possible, if that is what you are trying to acheive. But, I think you are most likely going to have issues finding speakers with a shallow enough mounting depth, especially one that would require that sort of airspace (I doubt it exists). Then there is the logistical issue of where to put your amps, if you take up all the room behind the seat.

I'll have to do some math if I do want to get the 13tw5's after all, but the boxes I had tuned for 10w6v2's tuned in best right at .928 cuft. I'm not going for pure volume, but neither am I experienced enough with car audio to know how capacity varies to tune for a specific sub. I'll have to find all the formulas and whatnot I used when I worked out the boxes for the 10w6's..Hopefully the shallower depth would allow for a slightly lower, or at least similar volume since the 13tw5's got an xmax reduced by roughly half, to make up for the larger surface area as compared to the 10w6.

I'd also like to check out your gallery sooner.

My only reservation on the 13tw5's, aside from price, are potential sound quality issues. Please recognize that's a completely unfounded concern, stemming from no reviews I've read and definitely not from hearing them in person, I just have a very simple mind, and subs that small can't logically make great sound in my undersized brain

 

I have searched everywhere for boxes myself and this is what I found.


The deepest box I have seen was built with 5/8" MDF and had a depth of 5 1/2 inches. So the depth would be less if using 3/4" mdf to build the box. I have seen a fiberglass box (all fiberglass except the front wall of the box ) and it had a depth of 5 5/8". Also there was a limit on the diameter of the magnets on the box of the subs and that was 6". If the magnets are larger, then the depth you have available decreases. All of these boxes were for 8's or 10's. The only times I have seen these trucks with 12's they were of the slim sub variety.

Airspace wise, the largest 2 sub box I have seen was .8 cubic foot per sub. If doing a single sub, and building the box all the way across, 1.6 is possible.

 

Image Dynamics ID 12 fits all those specifications and so does the StereoIntegrity Mag. The Mag is the better sub and is VERY shallow <5in. Even just one of those will be plenty for a Tacoma.

 

Have 4 ID8's, each pair sharing .60 cubic ft in seperate enclosures. So i squeezed in about 1.2 cubes, and could have done more if not for design of amp rack. Hope this helps.

 

I'm just skimming through today since I've been extremely busy so my apologies in advance if I say anything that was already covered! 10W6v2's are some of my favorite subs however they will not fit without some serious surgery. On the other hand if you like the w6v2 IMO you will also like the 13TW5 as they have very similar SQ. Also, the depth available in a DC is dependent on basket shape and diameter as well as magnet diameter.

 

Indeed...very nice sub but also very pricey. Fits the bill completely in this case but the bill is what you'll be worried about.
